740 heating / fans died!

Title pretty much says it all! I have the dual zone heating, it seems to be making heat ok but no fans at all. When you change the directional settings you can hear something happening but no fans at all, no matter what settings. Worked fine one day, nothing the next, not even on de-mist setting. I have checked fuse 20 and 32 which I think are the correct ones.

Everything else works fine.

Any ideas or best to call a mechanic or an auto-electrician?

This applies to the E39 so I assume the E38 is similar - apologies if its not.

The usual cause of blower problems is the final stage resistor, or hedgehog. It's cheap and reasonably easy to change although it generally causes irrational blower control rather than complete death.

I had EXACTLY the same problem as you last week on my 530i - it was a faulty heater blower fan itself and I ended up paying £318 for my BMW main dealer to replace it. Works fine now.

Like you I could hear the mechanism adjusting etc but no air.

So do I have to take it to BMW or can any auto electrician check such a thing?

I had exactly the same problem on my 330i (no fans at all). Part cost £40 from OEM supplier and my local friendly indy fitted it for £60. Not sure if it will be the same for a 7 series. I'd take it to your local indy.

ETA it was just the final stage resistor on mine (hedgehog).
