Hi all,

I'm looking to buy either of the above, but as they're both obsolete models, haven't been able to compare the specs very well.

Is the 720 worth the extra, and what additional features does it have over the One XL?

Is it better made/faster/longer battery/better functionality? I only really need itinery planning and EU maps. Bluetooth would be handy, but can't see me using it as an MP3 player....

The cheapest I've found them so far, is £140 for the One XL, and £185 for the 720, so is the 720 worth an extra £45?

Thanks peeps,

Andy.

the 720 has text to speech (will read the road name out rather than just turn left, turn right etc), bluetooth for audio as well as data (altho it's of limited use as the speaker on it is piss poor!) and FM transmission of mp3/nav instructions through the radio - the phone can't be routed via FM.

unless you have a specific need for TTS, Bluetooth and FM Transmission, buy a TT1XL Europe - or add a hundred quid or so and get a Go 730 with the lane guidance and IQ routing...

Don't agree with Frederick about hands-free phone - I find it works well, it's probably down to how loud your car is.

Apart from the features listed, there is virtually no difference. One XL EU is certainly an excellent satnav.

BTW, TT seem to have just introduced a new set of maps - v 7.2 to replace 7.1. You might want to check you are getting the latest maps.

They offer "latest map guarantee" which means that if the maps on your newly purchased unit are old, the new and current ones will be downloaded free of charge as long as it's plugged into the PC within a 30 day window of the first time it has been turned on.

The bluetooth is very dependent on your car, there are louder units on the market but it's horses for courses - if you have a merc car you'll be fine, if you have a merc sprinter - you'll struggle a bit.

Imo, if I wanted bluetooth hands free, I'd stick to a proper parrot kit rather than a make-do version bolted onto a sat nav smile

According to a thread on here a few days ago the Bluetooth on TT One isn't a hands-free mobile voice feature but just for traffic updates.

I've been looking at exactly the same two units, kicking myself because a couple of months ago you could get the 720 for £169 now I can't find it cheaper than £195 (with stock) or £140 for the XL from Tescos. Do I need the 5 hour battery of the GO or will the 2 hour battery of the One XL be OK? Will be using it to get around the South of France & a bit of Italy in a few days time.

You'll never see 5 hours out of a 720 tbh... if you don't need the bluetooth/fm etc - get the XL Europe. Seriously.

That's true on the One XL - Bluetooth only for data, not hands free phone.

I have a One Xl EU. All fine until six weeks old and it won't switch on. Turns out its a firmware issue - need a pin (sharp pointy thing, not a code!) to reset it. Rather disappointed with that. Seems to navigate fine, although I would like to be able to customise routes more easily - I want a Nav to guide me to my plan more than make the plan for me because I may have specific route needs that cannot be met by the standard "fastest, shortest etc" options. But I don't know what Navs are better in that respect.

Cannot you do that using Itinerary Planning? - apparently this function has been deleted from TomTom One v3, but I thought it was still on the XL?? The Garmin 8X0 series have a similar feature. In either case, if you prefer you can prepare the route on a PC using one of Mapsource, Autoroute, Google Maps or ViaMichelin, and then transfer it to the GPS.
