Because I'm hopefully buying one or the other later today.

My heart lies with the PS3 but I'm not sure I can justify spending double the price on one over the Xbox 360. Is it worth it and why?

Don't bother with the £150 Core 360, go for the Premium at the very least, you'll be wanting a HDD eventually and you'll be glad you have a wireless pad at times.

As to whether the PS3 is worth X amount more than the 360 the big question is going to come down to which game(s) you're buying it for, if you're out for a specific game that's only available on one platform then your choice is made for you, if you're not that bothered about specific games but want the biggest library of titles then it has to be the 360.

So for what reason does your heart lie with the PS3? If you simply must have GT5: Prologue then fair enough (and I'd add money to your budget for a wheel otherwise it's kind of wasted on the Sixaxis Pad), but I'll point out that you're unlikely to see the full game until 2010, whereas you could be enjoying Forza 2 right now.

On ebay a top of the range Xbox 360 (is that the premium one?) has just sold for £92. PS3's are going for £275 upwards.

The reason my heart lies with the PS3 is that I want my two favourite games of all time. The new Gran Turismo and Grand Theft Auto.

I can get GTA 4 on the xbox but would obviously have to settle without GT5.

Obviously it has Blu-ray too but there is something stopping me buying both. I think the price is stopping me buying the PS3 and the fact I know I'd be settling for second best if I bought the Xbox 360 is whats stopping me buying one of them.

The elite is the top model 360, denoted by its black paint job. I would be careful buying one second hand unless you've seen it working, as it could be banned from xbox Live, or could be a dead machine.

I definitely wouldn't say you're settling for second best by going for the 360, GT5: Prologue is little more than a glorified demo, but if you're happy to wait a couple of years for the full thing then that's fine, I haven't touched Prologue after about 6 hours play when I bought it, couldn't get on with the pad and I don't have a suitable wheel to play it with, Forza is where I get my racing kicks.

GTA is pretty much identical on both machines, only thing that swayed me into buying it on my xbox was the exclusive content that is coming in August.

By all means buy the cheap XBox now and get GTA, then by the time Gran Turismo arrives in 2010 you can go out and get a PS3 then, by which time it will probably be around £180.

I do like my PS3, but other than a couple of good games for it I've not really touched it apart from watching Blu-Rays.

Which console do most of your mates have? This is key if you want to go online a lot. It is so much better with people you know and can play regularly with.

halo 3 has a lovely 3 hour campaign ... gran turismo will be bigger than both forza and pgr put together... i think gta is over hyped so wouldn't spend extra money on a game which is huge already , plus metal gear is better than gow? oh and god of war 3, uncharted, resistance 2,FFXII and tekken.. Home comes shortly as do trophies ( bit like 360 achievements ) free online and blueray?? Oh and the ps3 doesn't break down every week.ETA: The 360 is a bit noisy isn't it?

Mr Skylinecarazy - clearly you are a huge supporter of the PS3, adn nothing wrong with that (although I would have the opinion that your arguments are a little unbalanced)

Couple of my 2p's thrown in:

My 360 lives under the sofa, it doesn't sound like my car without an exhaust, in fact I can't hear it. Apparently they are noisy, but I certainly haven't noticed it, I think it'd be an irrelevance anyway, since it'd have to be very noisy to intrude on typical game soundtracks, even at lower volumes. For watching films, this would be more of an issue. I think most members fo the human race (who don't have a large collection of the now defunct HD DVD films) would agree the 360 is not a tool for watching your films on.

Many people happen to like Halo 3, I've enjoyed it for many hours, generally on multi player. Due to the numbers that seem to play on it, I'd suggest it must be pretty good or they'd have all rushed out and got something else to play or do.

There seems to be a lot of talk over the PS3's online experience being upgraded soon, and GT5 full version coming out too that will 'smash Forza into the weeds' - however these are all promises and not actualities at the moment, it's a bit like saying the 360 will be better once they get a blu ray drive. Whilst home may be near, GT5 full version, I understand, be scheduled for 2010, therefore that's also another 2 years for others to develop other franchises, and they are already starting from an established base (i.e. to hold Forza 2 as a comparison to GT5P is surely a good thing given that Forza 2 has been around for nearly a year in full version, now passing to the budget racks in Game, and could therefore be clased as 'old news' at the speeed the software market runs, that sounds like the replacement for F2 has a good year in the bag on what GT5 development has...)

Anyway, apologies, I don't want to be unbalanced, and to sort of sit on the fence (but suggest an approach) - choosing a console is a lot like people choosing a car on here, you'll note not everyone buys the same car. Decide on your current (and short term future needs), what it is you want out of a console (and the accessories and or subscriptions you may need to achieve these) and then do the comparison, there are no real right or wrong answers...

Don't apologise lol, everyone has ther own opinion and are entitled to it, apparently GT5 is going to be released at the end of 09 but polyphony have a habit of delaying their games and yea i agree with the 360 not being made as a DVD player, although by the end of the year i do think the Ps3 will have a significant advantage over the 360, which is home.

If you're not interested in Bluray or using the rather awesome media functions on the PS3, I would probably buy the 360. It has more games, the online is better and the pads are better IMHO. It's badly made, noisy and will crash more often but it's a better gaming machine right now. The PS3 is more expensive but you do get a lot more in the package (wifi, bluray, bigger HDD etc), basically everything you need is in the box.

The PS3 will come into it's own once they sort the online side of things. Ideally you need to buy both, that's what I did tongue out

I'm only interested in the gaming aspect. I would rarely being going online to play, although its something I will get into.

Blu-ray isn't a big issue for me at the moment. Until its fully backed by everyone I don't feel it worth paying extra for. The Media funtions as well don't interest me a lot as I can do all that stuff through my Mac Mini connected to my TV.

So bascially its all about the gaming. GTA and GT5 are the only two games taking my fancy, although I will inevitably buy Pro Evo at some point.

I was considering buying a 360 until a PS3 becomes too good to resist (price wise and gaming wise). Then part chop the 360 for a PS3.
