I am taking part in the 2008 Scumball rally (10 -15 July) in order to raise money for the Perthes Association.

The Perthes Association (www.perthes.org.uk) helps and advises families of children suffering from Perthes disease and associated conditions in all parts of the British Isles and overseas.

Perthes disease (a potentially crippling disease of the hip) is a form of osteochondritis, which affects 5.5 per 100,000 children (mainly boys) between the ages of 2 and 15 years. It affects the head of the femur (the ball of the ball and socket joint of the hip) the blood supply to the growth plate of the bone (called the epiphysis) becomes inadequate. As a result the bone softens and breaks down (a process called necrosis).

This cause is very close to my heart as my son, Max, was a sufferer.

The Scumball is very loosely based on the Gumball rally. Instead of roaring across exotic countries in supercars Scumballers drive from Donnington race circuit (UK) to Nurburgring race circuit (Germany) in cars worth less then £1000, a round trip of over 1000 miles, all in aid of charity. The car I’ve purchased especially for the event is a 1984 Pontiac Trans Am, picked up from ebay for £600.

If you would like to sponsor us either visit our blog (www.pontikak.blogspot.com) and click “Make a Donation” or contact me directly at taylor@karlnanne.fsnet.co.uk

All donations how ever big or small are appreciated. However, for donations over a fiver you can add you message of “encouragement”, sign your name or even draw a “nice” picture onto a sticker that will be stuck on to the bonnet of the car. Let me know if you want a sticker and I’ll get one to you.

If you know of any companies that would be interested in supporting us, please let me know as we are selling advertising space on the car in return for a modest donation to the Perthes Association. The event is well publicised in the motoring and mainstream press and is likely to be televised on Sky TV. This would be a great way to spend a little of that advertising budget whilst supporting a good cause.

You can track our progress on our blog at www.pontikak.blogspot.com

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
