Well I've been under the 350i recently 'cos the starter motor solenoid has seized. I've tried lubricating it but no luck - so off it has to come. But will those allen head bolts come out? Luckily I managed to crack open the top one, but the bottom one was well knackered...

It's the one on the left obviously.

So I had to spend a couple of hours and about 10 drill bits drilling a hole into it. My first attempt sheared the 4mm bolt I had put through, so I found something a bit beefier, an old screwdriver.

Here's how I eventually got it off, by hacking an old 14mm socket. The old screwdriver shaft went though the hole in the bolt head and the slots on the socket.

What eejit decided to put these on? If I had't got them out it would be an engine-out job. So this is the game for BBWF - bring along an effigy of the designer or engineer of a particularly bad feature of the wedge, then burn it on a ceremonial pyre!

Yeah but - to get enough room I'd have had to have taken off the exhaust manifold and possibly the clutch slave too.
