Internal vibration on exhaust silencer box
Discussion
Have a loud vibration noise coming from silencer on my 2.9 V6 S2. Have been told its the silencer "breaking up" Have also been told I can just open it up and remove offending items! then stainless steel weld it back up. The result making it louder with no rattle, which is really pi****g me off at the moment. Will this really work, is it as easy as it sound, has anybody else done it??? Has anybody else had a similar problem. The only other cure is another exhaust system, comes in one piece, at £400 plus vat!! Help
Had a very annoying vibration from my S/S exhaust box at certain frequencies. Turned out to be remains of a broken up catalyst stuck inside the box. Anyway, I had to resort to cutting the underside of the box open with a grinder, removing the particles, and then left it to a professional to reweld it. The biggest obstacle was the mental one of actually cutting the box open myself. The rest was no big deal. It did not cost much to reweld. E-mail me if you need more details.

I have the same problem...
My previous owner has had the baffle in the exhaust re-welded, but it has come loose again and has that nasty rattle on low revs.
Seems like I will have to replace the exhaust...
Does anyone have any suggestions where the best place to buy or have a new one fitted ? Costs etc?

Both RT Racing and Peninsula have a good reputation, IIRC £400ish, (but I could well be wrong about that).
You could always just cut the silencer out, decent exhaust place that prefabrictaes themselves should be able to do that. Bear in mind that there is a body of opinion that suggests loud sports exhausts do nothing for the performance of the car. Can't say for sure, but of the two S's I know best, (mine and what was Shnozz's), his is the stronger performer without the subtle tone of my pipe, (take a look on www.sleepyfish.com).

Hi Paul
I have just ordered full stainless sports exhaust from Peninsula. £285 +vat £30 del. Next Day. It was their last one in stock.. The V8 exhaust has about a 3 week wait.
Fitting doesn't look too difficult.
Anything to get rid of that rattle........
Anyone got any tips / pitfalls for fitting?
I'll let you know how I get on..

The bafle that comes loose is in the front section rather than the box section that sits between the chasis. If you simply cut a channel along the bottom about 4" wide along the centre you can rip the baffle out. You simply then weld back the piece you cut out.
Since you retain the baffles within the box section which is also stuffed with some material the sound of the exhuast is not materially affected.
I did mine 12 months ago - it cost £30 plus a Big Mac meal but the rattle has nver returned - and of course never will.

Your new systym will be lower than the original and consequently more liable to grounding, have a 'skid plate ' welded from the expansion box to the pipe itself , this will help the unit to ride over stuff rather than digging in with expensive results !

bought mine from peninsula about a month ago see "which exhuast" ,it took me 3 goes to get it right.1st attempt the exhuast was tight on the sump and the mounts didnt line up.second attempt i pushed the exhuast to far along the down pipes again the mounts didnt line up. third attempt i ended up lining up the exhuast and marking on the pipes were they should join then found out the back mount was out of line by an inch and needed redrilling.with the car on axle stands i found it easier to take off the down pipes "by now they were loose anyway" and connect them to the exhaust then place a scissor jack at the back end to the height for the exhaust to sit then connected the down pipes up followed by the mounts.it allways looks so simple at the exhuast centers, but lying on your back with 3metres of stainless steel pipes and a car 2foot above you makes it hard work .not sure if this is the right way or not but it might help you......dre ps is it split tail pipes or close together ????
