Mini keeps stalling, cannot idle...
Discussion
What can be causing this? Even with the choke out, engine cannot stay at idle for longer than 5 seconds without dieing. This is getting quite annoying, as I had to restart the engine about 15 times on my way to work this morning (7 mile drive!)
Sometimes it happens whilst I change gear!
What can be causing this?
I've heard it could be the idle control valve, any ideas where this is?

What mini do you have. Dose it idel ok if you are not driving and dose hot cold make a diffrance, dose it start well? With this sort of problem is it worth giving the car a sevice befor doing anything else. Including oil in the dash pot (If its has a carb). Hope this helps but a bit more info would be helpfull.

Hi Dan, its a Mini 35, 1275 with a HIF38 Carb. It starts ok, but cannot idle without having the choke on. I get literally a maximum of a second with the clutch down before it stalls, or possible 2 seconds in neutral before it complete stalls, so I have to drive everywhere with the choke on! Car was serviced back in April, and I haven't had a chance to try and find the dashpot yet, I will have a look tonight. When did it last have its MOT and have the symptoms arrived since.?Common fault is that garages wind the needle in a couple of flats to get 1275cc Carb Mini's through MOT emissions tests. This leaves them running very lean low down with idling and low speed stalling issues as you've described.

Are you using "fast idle" (effectively just the first notch on choke cable) - to maintain engine rpm/idle?

Follow the cable from the peddel to the carb. On the side of the carb you will find the lever the cable attaches to. On the lever there is a screw that sets the tike over (Just by contoling how much the lever can close). Ajusting that to give you a higher tike over may get you going for the moment. But it is well worth finding out what has caused this problem. Hope this helps. Dan
