Drove from Milton Keynes to Swindon (A421,A420) and back - and returned 34MPG according to the OBC (which we all know lies a little) but still good. Basicly stuck to the speed limit, didn't overtake and pulled away gently - nothing else. Considering the cost of Diesel nowadays thats the equivalent of 37.8 dMPG.
Must admit its sooo boring driving like that though.

Yes, been playing around in my 540i Touring and with ultra-care I reckon I can do that too...be interesting to see what I can get on a super clear run to Le Mans.

I've just done a 1200 mile round trip, Aberdeen - Essex - Aberdeen in my 840 and at average 85 - 90 mph on the M ways fuel con. worked out at 25 mpg. My brother used have a 540 and reckoned he could get 32 on a motorway run at 90. Bit lighter than an 8 and maybe the gearing's a bit different.

Biggest influence is moving off from standstill and not using more than 2,000 rpm to get up to your chosen cruise speed.

35 mpg in your 540 shows commendable restraint and good reading of road conditions.

frown As you say though. Rather boring.

Got similar in my E34 540 touring (once!) on a trip back from Shropshire to Somerset. So dull, that I've never tried to replicate it again.

Yes thats right. When pulling away from the lights I "matched" a 1.2 corsa! - Good fun for the day, but normal service will resume today.

I got over 30mpg on the 5 miles home from the petrol station once, but it's overall slightly downhill. Never beaten 29.5mpg for a whole tank.

I've just sold my E39 540i manual, and I used to routinely get 34 - 35 mpg on a long steady run, and 28 - 29 mpg commuting. A few times I got 39 - 40 mpg by setting the cruise control to 70, but that's a bit boring. I get the impression that smaller engines aren't more economical. It all depends on using that long, long sxth gear, though. That was the real reason I bougth the car, it was a fantastic cruiser.

I'm new to the world of 540s (e34) but recently, as part of an 800mile weekend, managed a 30mpg average on the outward leg up until the last , twisty, 20miles to my sister's house on the edge of York Moors.

After which solid spankage quickly pulled the average down to 24ish, and held it there biggrin
