MOT question ....
Discussion
My current MOT expires at the end of September.
If I got the car MOT'd next week and it fails (which I suspect it might) - is the existing MOT still valid, and therefore I am 100% legal to drive, or does the new one (ie - failure) override the existing one?
I ask as I have a chipped headlight lens, which I suspect will fail it, and I refuse to pay the £110 the main stealerships are quoting me - so searching hi and lo for a 2nd hand one.
Many thanks in advance,
K

As I understand it a car must be in MOT condition all year round and if a car fails it's MOT it is not legally allowed to drive on the road.
Having said that if all you think it will fail on is chipped headlight I highly doubt a local garage will stop you driving away but you will probably have to get it re-tested ASAP...
Have you tried the local shops for replacements? The place down the bank from where I live sells third Party kit (and has been doing for years), is much cheaper in price and usually just as good if not better quality.

your MOT runs to the end of Sept.
End of story.
Is there an official record of anything else?
If you look at the terms of the MOT it says that it does not guarentee the roadworthyness of the vehicle.
So why is it a prerequisite of all other major vehicle documentation?
Just a long way of saying you are good till the end of September. Enjoy.

Thanks for that Stefan and planetdave.
I'm not overly concerned as the chip does not affect the headlight beam in any way (but it does the foglight). And as it's all 1 unit it's a bit of a pain - hence my question.
And thanks planetdave for really confirming what I'd thought (but had better check).

Does not the issue of a failure notice invalidate the current MOT certificate?
I'd try getting the headlight repaired. A quick search on the WWW truned up a number of potentials.
You can also try : www.lds.co.uk/franchise/beaver.HTM - this is a franchise operator, but they should be able to give you the name of a local repairer (usual disclaimers).

Your MOT will last until Sept because it was validated for a year.
The law itself is an absolute ass on this point because common sense says that if you have another MOT done 6 months down the line then your vehicle should not be on the road.
However, if you are unlucky enough to get stopped by Trafpol and the faults are found, then your car will be taken off the road and a new MOT will have to be obtained from the date of the PG9 Prohibition.
Edited to say that if i was in your position then i wouldnt drive it until the faults have been rectified.

Streaky - unfortunately the damage is a 2-3mm hole with approx 4-6mm 'crazing' all around it - therefore I would expect it's unrepairable. And thanks for the link - a very interesting website!
And Tonyrec - thank you. I do have to agree with you that it's a bit of an ass. For example, I've seen cars and vans with cracked windscreens, and I don't understand why they're not replaced immediately. I'd be horrified/terrified to drive a car with a crack running right across it.
Having said that - I am in the process of getting a 2nd hand replacement (and I hope a tiny bit cheaper than the £110 I was quoted. All for a single piece of glass! - made by Wedgwood is it?).
As soon as it's received it'll be fitted immediately.
