Right I have a nice dilemma, but a dilemma none the less.

I've been offered two cars, same price S1 and S2 exige.

But it's hard to choose between the two.

I don't drive everyday but I do drive to clients, every now and again. Plus my wife will need to drive it from time to time.

As far as I see it:

S1 Pros:
Faster (marginally)
Rare
Residuals
Looks

S2 Pros:
Newer
More reliable?
Easier to live with (read wife to drive)
S3 due soon? Residuals/resale hard?

It's tricky and I'd just like a little real world advice. Did a search but couldn't find anything.

With your criteria i would say the S2. Based on my experience---

my other half...

S1 elise- loved it
S2 elise- loved it
S2 exige- even with A/C tolerates it(with the harnesses she loathed it)
S1 exige- hates with a passion, she will never ever drive it through choice

If you're wife might need to drive it S2 no question.

Leaves more S1s for the rest of us!

If it's a daily driver / mode-of-transport then I'd steer clear of the S1 TBH.

The S1 is a MUCH better car for being an adrenalin pump and it's a MUCH quicker car around a track (assuming like for like, all else being equal) but reliable it's not (generally). If you DO use it daily it'll not age especially well, and getting in and out of the thing can get tiresome.

The S2 is still a crackingly good drive though and will probably suit what you want it for better.

I've got an Exige S1 and I love it to bits, I wouldn't change it for the world (much less an S2 Exige) but I couldn't justify it as an everyday, all-weather drive. They're rare and precious and I prefer to use it as a weekend toy rather than let it succumb to the chore of day-to-day driving.

That's just my opinion though.... I'd take the S1 every time and get a sheddy hatchback for the daily grind... but not everyone is in that position.

Thanks all. It's a very tricky one. On one hand if, and this was reinforced last night, the wife has to drive it I may as well go for a touring with carpets, comfort, etc.

Or get a smart car and the S1.

S1 Exige - was what it set out to be....... S2 was largely just an Elise with a roof

Mate of mine used his S1 Exige everyday and loved it.

he had it 18 months, bought it with 39k on the clock, sold it with 67k on the clock, like i said, after 18 months!!

depends how much of a girl you are I spose... Personally I wouldnt use a car as rare and raw as one of them everyday myself..

So you CAN use them everyday, just depends wether you want to!

It seems most people on here are rightly towards the hardcore end of lotus owners and good on them, and I'm a huge fan of the S1 Exige too, however the mk2 is a brilliant and very exciting car, don't think for a moment it's anything less. It can also be supercharged for you should you find some spare cash burning a hole in your pocket further down the line. A heavily modded S1 will be worth less than a good standard one. For me the toyota gearbox is much nicer to use than the S1 cars and that's the main improvement.

For me personally I'd rather have a Sportsracer or Elise R with a sports pack to a standard S2 Exige, even though you can take the roof off all of them. But the supercharged Exiges move the game on beyond that at a price of course. As mentioned the S1 is a classic already and so would best be kept standard.

well after days of deliberation, S2 it is. TBH the wife made my mind up so I'm happy to go along whilst I still have the green light.

So question part two, touring pack vs Performance Pack, real world with 3 track days a year? Thanks all.
