Engine arrived...

Certainly a complicated bit of kit - I'm not sure what half the gizmo's on it do (some scribbling of part numbers and a week of internet research required methinks). Will junk anything that's not essential and see what we have left!

Also picked up an Audi 6-speed transaxle (01X) - keeps things simple and not too costly.

Guess there's some work to be done!

It's certainly physically bigger than the SBC, but I suspect it may be lighter - will fire them both on the commercial scales later!

I really want to take the engine back to its basic 'suck, squeeze, bang, blow' principles. The only 'fancy' bit that's getting to stay is the VVT - just need to make sure that my ECU is up to controlling that.

Not sure what the effects of taking all the fancy electrics etc off the engine might lead to (dead engine probably), but hoping that it won't lose any power... and praying that it might make some more power!

Time will tell.

[quote=Scotty-Boy]Engine arrived... think I got my £2k's worth redface

Obviously damaged parts (all nearside):
Exhaust manifold (not a big deal - it's getting junked anyway).
Starter (lost a mount - bit of a bugger as not cheap).
Cam Cover (small hole - should hopefully pick one up from a srappy).
Base of block (needs a cosmetic weld - bit chipped off at a corner that could do with a tidy).

Everything looks a-ok inside the cam covers, will take the sump off at the weekend to make sure there's no shrapnel in it.

Certainly a complicated bit of kit - I'm not sure what half the gizmo's on it do (some scribbling of part numbers and a week of internet research required methinks). Will junk anything that's not essential and see what we have left!

Is it a BBK or FSI spec engine?

It's the FSI (2007 B7 RS4).

Nice one Scott - I went for my Ultima test ride last week - absolutely phenomenal - esp braking and the ride was a lot better than I expected. Still not keen on SBC so hoping you'll keep us all up to date . Incidentally are you doing an engine swap ( if so from what )?

Regards and looking forward to reading about how your project progresses.

Hi Jim,

My kit came with a Chevy, but it never got as far as having it installed.

I'm just tidying up the chassis as it has some surface corrosion from being sat about for what seems like an eternity and then will drop the Audi Engine / Box in to see how much modifying is required to the mounts.

Will keep you posted!

Weighed the engine last night... 223kg. Had hoped for a bit less.

The Audi 01X transaxle is 62kg.

285kg for the whole drivetrain.

Anyone know how much an SBC / G50 drivetrain would weigh?

SBC weight depends on which one, heads and internals used etc but 228-242 kg, dont know on the box!

There's hopefully still a bit of flab to lose once I start stripping non-essentials off, but as I said - was hoping for less.

I'm thinking that the G50 is a little heavier than the 01X (purely on the basis of having lifted both). Will weigh my G50 later tonight.

75kg for the G50 (with clutch).

Went on a bit of a weighing frenzy... so, If anyone's interested (Spyder):

Radiator 15kg
Front Clip 30kg
Rear Clip 42kg
Rear Wing 15kg

I still can't get over the weight of my wheels / tyres... 18kg for each of the fronts and 25kg for each of the rears!

I guess that's the penalty for having such wiiiiiiiiiiiiiddddddddddddddddddde tyres!

Will have to work with the standard ECU as there are no aftermarkets up to the job.

Speaking to a chap down south who's a bit of an expert in re-programming these, so will se what we can delete from the software.

Hi Scott,

Regarding the 01X transaxle - is that OK in terms of the torque its going to be subject to and does it need any mods to fit the RS4 engine?

Hi Jim. It's a straight bolt-on (did it last night). The figures suggest it will blow up, but I'm banking on the fact that:

a) The Ultima is half the weight of anything else that the gearbox is used for.
b) The gearbox is used for Audi's TDI's which produce a lot of torque in a narrow rpm range.
c) The RS4 engine revs to 8250, so the power is spread out a fair bit.
d) A new one is cheap. biggrin

223kgs... is that with the gearbox as I thought they were around 170kgs?
My BMW V12 is 190ks with the cast iron manifolds and a pair of turbos!

223KG does sound a lot as the older 32 valve Audi V8 (which is basically the same) comes in at 180KG dry including exhaust manifolds, starter and alternator.

I'll weigh it again tonight to be sure.

Still having problems trying to find someone to defeat the immobiliser... Bosch UK were about as helpful as a chocolate fireguard and one guy down south wanted £4k to do it!!!

Am I right in thinking that not only are you a V8 transplanting genius, but you're also an electrical guru Hilly? Want to give it a crack? whistle
