I know this should be easy, but, how do I remove the collar under the the gear knob to remove them without damage? I am just trying the simple task of replacing my gear shift gaitor with a new leather one. So far all I have done is put marks in the collar when trying to loosen it

collar simply unscrews downwards, then knob unscrews upwards

Tried vice grips yesterday, so I don't think rubber will work!. I will have to just undo with vice grips and make a new collar when destroyed!

Hold on do you mean the lipped collar that's fairly tight around the shaft once the knob is removed (Oo er missus).

I'm not sure that one does come off. But the gaitor will slide over it.

No! not got that far yet! this is the collar just below the gear knob. I am going to try brute force tonight after work. I can re-make the part on a lathe
