I'm currently looking to replace my daily driver, and have come to the conclusion that the Toyota supra Twin Turbo looks like a lot of fun for not a whole hill of beans. So, as I have absolutely no experience with these cars, I have come to you to ask:

1. What are the pitfalls of a car costing £10,000?
2. If Q1 is a lenghty list, how much more do I have to spend to reduce it?
3. Does the fact that the car features heavily in the film "The Fast and the Furious" mean that the "Kev's" are too interested in them, as they were in my Serria Saphire Cosworth, and hence the insurance premiums were extortionate?

Any advice would be most appreciated, many thanks in advance, Dirk.

You don't want one of them, you want a Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo

Seriously though, the Supra's are great cars. I'm no expert on them though, but I should imagine the buying process is very similar to the 300....go on condition rather than mileage/age. There will be loads of imports around. Don't necessarily be put off by them. My 300's an import but I got it from a very knowledgable dealer (Jap specialist). You're likely to lose the service history on the boat over, so that's a major downside. Still, imports are often better specced than the UK cars and normally have lower mileages.

Best bet would be to shop around and try a few out. There are plenty of dogs out there going for strong money, so beware. Always worth getting an RAC/AA inspection.

Oh, and get some insurance quotes first. Imports are often loaded by up to 50% (for no appararent reason other than the insurance companies can get away with it.)

Good luck

UK Six speed manual's are hard to come by now.

They have 324 BHP as standard and have bigger discs and a bonnet vent, which the Jap cars don't have.
They also have glass headlamps, where as imports have plastic/perspex.

The jap imports have around 280bhp in standard form.

No real reliability problems, although the car has a bit of an image problem, IMHO, as virtually everyone has stuck hideous spoilers & big wheels on them.

I would try and get a totally standard one, but for 10k you would probably be looking at an import.

Lee.

Thanks for the info, I've been looking around and have found a veritable minefeild, UK?Import? No standard cars at all! But what I have seen has spured me on to find a good one, as since driving the TT Supra, Plan B, i.e buying another Cossie is now not an option.

As with any Jap car check out the owners group before buying. They are a friendly bunch (I know a couple of them) and will let you know the pitfalls. There may also be some of them selling their cars.

I am not trying to compare them to TVR's in any way but the buying advice seems to be the same, buy a known car. That way you have a MUCH better idea of its history and wether it has been looked after.

Good luck.

I thought the ealry ones were single OHC then they changed to DOHC.I may be wrong though.
