Whats the view on discounts on second hand watches.
I guess it depends on the watch you are looking at and the discounts availible from new.

But for example lets say a 15% discount is availible on the new watch, should i be able to get a 15% discount on the advertised price of a second hand one?

It also depends on dealer margins on the second hand items...

I actually want a plain rolex datejust with jubilee bracelet. or a explorer 2

But I am slightly unsure as to whether i want such a "generic" watch, or maybe something more unussual such as an IWC or blancpain or JLC or GP

Any views?

As an example:

I had a mint Audemars Piguet 18K manual wind ultra thin. Lovely, lovely thing.

I was browsing an anonymous watch dealer on the strand (Oh, there's only one? Oops) and they had the same model, with a poorer dial, at £3000 in the window.

They also had a rather nice Chronomat I was there to buy. Out of interest whilst viewing the Breitling I took the AP off and asked what I'd get for it in p/x.

'Ooh, can't shift 'em. Never popular, even worse now, would probably go about £600, maybe £750, but I'd need to check' yikes

That sort of margin is not unusual on a lot of pieces.

However, if as a dealer you are buying in Stainless Rolex Sport models or the like, you'll be working on a far smaller margin, just because they are so more easily saleable. A punter with a 50's Blancpain is going to have to look around for a buyer so will take a lower offer. Someone with a Daytona knows what they can get for it, and it's just a matter of advertising it and waiting for the queue to form....

So it depends on what you are buying, really.
