First off, where to get a new one and how much am I likely to pay?

Is the chain at the back of the engine (nearest windscreen)?

How many hours and hence what price to just change the chain, if I supply the part?

Thanks

There seems to be a lot of timing chain questions recently.

Not sure, but doesnt it depend on whether you have aircon.

TVR Power do them I think. The chain is at the front of the engine. If you have aircon, you need to take the engine out, as the front cover can't be removed in situ (the snout of the crank for aircon engine is longer). Engine in and out etc. could be looking at £1200 or so depending on what else is done at the time.

Do you specifically have a problem with yours? Mine was replaced at 100k miles or so, as the engine had to come out to replace a missing timing chain guide bolt. There is no 'service interval' for this part, as I don't think TVR had thought that far ahead smile

I had mine done whilst the engine was out. Power I think it came from, also as Kojak said, If you have aircon then engine out I think as the timing chain cover won't come off to allow access.

The timing chain itself is about £70 but you have to strip half the engine away to get to the front cover,so as has been said, probably easier to remove the engine first rolleyes In which case might be worth giving the whole engine a 'freshen up' scratchchin

You have to remove the front cover and cam covers, but that's it as far as I know. How this constitutes dismantling half the engine I don't know, and is a long way off an engine rebuild situation .. and as these units are very hardy if your engine is ok other than the chain why disturb it?

I think the logic is that taking the engine in and out is a fair old whack of $s. So why not capitalise and get it refreshed for abnother couple of grand.

I could see the logic in that if it didnt treble the cost of the job, or the engine was getting a bit tired, but seems a waste of 2 grand if you've got a strong engine that's not giving you any trouble other then a slack chain ..

Could you not put a new chain with a split link in it and wind it round the engine ? You would only have to remove the cam covers ! David

Hey Joo wavey
Maybe that was a SLIGHT exaggeration, but you do have to remove alot to take the front cover off and support the engine as the engine mounts have to be removed. Depending on mileage condition etc it might just be worth removing the lot?? Hence i used the scratchchin smiley
