Looking at getting a new car in the next few weeks. Im 18 just comming up for a years no claims. Looking to spend £3000 - £4500 on the car and about £2000 a year max on insurence. Want something fun to drive but not too harsh on the mpg. Would like an older car because they seem to be cheaper to insure. Eunos, E30, Golf maybe? Any ideas?

I looked at a Golf, I'm a girl and insurance on that for me was well over £2000, even for a smaller engine. I had a 206 for a while, that was very cheap to run on both tax/insurance and petrol costs. Now I have a focus 1.8, cost me £1600 to buy, £950 to insure, and as far as I can see in my first day of ownership, it seems a brilliant car. Much more fun to drive and still looks fantastic, 8 years old now but looks newer than a lot of younger cars in my opinion smile
Only thing I need to find out, is how well it does with fuel consumption... might be a little thirsty but shall see.
Good luck finding one!
xx

If you don't need much practicality and you like it an MX-5 would be blast to own. Alternatively also consider the 106 gti or rallye (both brilliant handlers), mk2 golf gti and the Honda cr-x (if you can find an unmolested one) also spring to mind.

Edit for Louisa911 - the economy on the 1.8 isn't too bad, even when hooning. Low 30's in town, 44 (ish) on the motorway at about 75 mph.

I vote for a 106 Rallye. Could do MUCH worse than one of those and it seems to be a 'proper' hot hatch unlike the Punto sporting et al.

Could get a quote on a UK MX5? If not, maybe something like a mk.1 Golf Gti on a classic policy?

Classic policies are difficult if you're 21-25 and nigh on impossible at 17-20 so I don't think that would be an option for him.

I will second that. Although to be fair spending £3000 on a Classic Mini would be a lot better investment, cheap classic insurance and a LOT of fun!.

If i was to sell my civic i'd love a G40 (off to check the classifieds).

Watch with older cars, insurance will be bumped up a bit if it has no security protection.

I'm 19 with 1 years ncb and am paying 700 quid for a 1992 honda civic lsi with light modifications (coilovers, manifolds etc)

If you could insure a crx vt then do, will give you the biggest smiles and are cheap to fettle with if your performance inclined

Can you get an early Skoda Fabia vRS for that money ? If so, I suspect that insurance wouldn't be too onerous, (provided it's not modded to death), the engines should last forever and it's a decent mix of practicality and fun............and cheap to run.

Just a thought.

Not forgeting that words like "rallye" and "GTi" have a tendacy to double the money for insurence.

I got a years no claims as a named driver, and now drive a late 306. First a high milage 1.6, then a low milage 1.8, which cost £9500 and £1800 to buy, and £700 and £750 to insure (First year, PA, one years named no claims, TPFT)

Im intrested in this topic anyway, i have no real thoughts on what my next car might be (would be looking for a change, but sometime simular).

I mountain bike a lot, as well as moving alot of stuff around. So the fact i can get 2-3 bike in the back, or most of 8*4 plywood sheet, 300kg of loose bagged coal, etc. Is a must. Which rules out the MX5 as a first car, although they are nice.
- VW's just seam expensive to me, when i compair my mates equivlent 1.4 golf to my 306. he seams to have less power, less space. However skoda's are worth consideration.
And im not a ford fan. (bizare personal/image thing)

I could get a newer car. If I do that Im thinking a 04 Fabia vRs or a new corsa Sxi. But I want to get a older car that cheaper with a bigger engine and spend the rest on insurence. Im going to look a few mx-5's this weekend and get a few quotes too. www.dandycar.com have some nive ones on. The 1991 V-special, £3995. If I can get insured under 2k may just buy it or something similar.

Just be aware that a light rear wheel drive car WILL catch you out if you drive it too fast for the road conditions, your manouver at the time or your driving experience - expecially if you have no or little experience with such a car - that's part of the reason for the insurance being high

You could also look around at other classic cars (MX-5s are over 15 years old) as you can get insurance for them if you contact the right insurance specialist for that vehicle (maybe not on a "classic" policy)

Ask the likes of dc53, young drivers with classic cars

If you drive like a tit then a front wheel drive car will catch you out too. In my experience MX-5s aren't actually very expensive to insure for young drivers.

Yeap totally agree

But a rear wheel drive car is more likely to catch you out when you think you're driving properly

One young PHer that I know of wrote off his first rear wheel drive car within weeks of getting it when he thought he was taking it easy enough

I got told by another PHer I was leaving nannying posts, this was before the accident - but heard nothing about this after the accident

However girly it is really consider a ka. They are great fun to drive and when you don't want to be an 18year old idiot...like moi...you can easily get 45-47mpg on b roads being sensible.

On the motorway i have once got 61mpg!

Well pleased. I got mine new (3miles on clock) for £4995. Ive seen ones brand spanking new now for £4700. Look on www.autobytel.co.uk and others like it.

My insurance for my second year as an 18yeard old being passed 1year was £585. I didnt think i would see 3figure prices for at least 4years!

Good Luck smile
