photoshop/monitor set up...help!
Discussion
I'm running photoshop CS on my g5 powermac with a 20" apple cinema screen.
when i open images in photoshop they look WILDLY different to the way they look when i post them on the web/ view them on other machines.
when open in photoshop they seem to have more contrast, less shadow detail, more highlight detail, more saturation, generally have more vibrance.
can anyone give me some pointers to change the settings in pshop? tried to adjust it myself a while back with no joy.
what colour settings do you all run?

Experiment with working in the SRGB colour space in photoshop, then post an image on the web and compare, you might find it more consistent.
Hope this helps!

will do,Hope this helps!

cheers fella
switched to srgb,
still looks darker in general, with more contrast but cooler highlights.
bit odd really.

Has the monitor been calibrated with e.g a Spyder? Is photoshop set to do its own monitor calibration adjustment? IOW, is the problem that you're piling two sets of adjustments on top of each other?
f
k knows??!!?the monitor is set tp on adobe rgb 98.
i've never had a spider on it, not really that clued up about these things (as you can probably guess)

The idea behind my suggestion is that since most web browsers (with the exception of Safari) display images in sRGB, if you are working in sRGB then you should see the same colours in the browser.
I can understand an image looking different if you are working in a different colour space to that which the browser displays, but once you start working in sRGB that shouldn't happen any more. Most odd.
I can't see how calibrating will help - if it's the same image on the same screen but simply displayed via a different medium (photoshop vs browser) then calibrating wont change that.

Wot he said. Make sure the apps you are viewing on support the colour space you are using. Can also proof in the colourspace you are using within PS to make sure the colours match. Somewhere in the view menu.I can understand an image looking different if you are working in a different colour space to that which the browser displays, but once you start working in sRGB that shouldn't happen any more. am I the only one to not see any differences in those two photos!
Scho CS can use its own screen profile which differs to the standard profile. I've not had to calibrate my screen as when I have tried it looks off, as standard it matches screen/print.

might help and I might give it another go but last time it messed things up.

lol well its only a subtle difference but the colours in the sRGB pic are more vivid on my monitor. If you're using safari then I understand you won't see a difference either, since that is able to manage the colours, unlike IE and FF.Scho said:
is it just me or is colour management a complete ball ache?
its not just you! I followed it step for step and it made the monitor worse. I think a lot of effort is put in to getting the correct balance from factory on modern panels which is probably why I never had an issue on mine? I know CS can use a different profile or means to compensate which hopefully that guide might help you.
If I look at a shot in digital photo pro or cs2 it looks ok, if previewed in ms jpeg preview the tones look weird same on the web.
