In hot weather my 2002 S offside front suspension squeaks and creaks like mad. Has anyone out there had this problem ? I have checked and nothing is loose, tried WD40 on the roll bar mounts etc but it still persists. scratchchin Thanks.

Not uncommon, you'll need new suspension parts. Not sure of cost - £500 - £1200 at an indy depending how much needs replacing?

Can you give me clue what could need replacing? Suspension leg? bushes joints? Why does it only make the noise in hot weather?
Thanks

Hi,

just had the trailing arm links done on my 996, rattled when warm. Apparently same issue on Boxster according to Steve at Jaz who did the work for me.

Cost was £120 per unit plus an hours labour.

That sounds excessive for a 2002 car.

Whilst I imagine that's the approach a dealer might take, a good indy should find out what the problem really is an replace the parts accordingly.

I'd be pretty cheesed off if I took mine in for a squeak and was told it would cost £500-£1200 to fix!

Not saying this is definately your problem but we find its more often than not the track control arm. We can supply exchange units (ie new bushes and ball joint)for £120 + VAT. I think new ones from Porsche are c.£185 + VAT. We usually replace them in pairs although its not essential.

I haven't had this kind of reapir done on a car (although have known of the same fault/s) and don't know what and how much is wrong with this one, hence the broad ball-park. I don't repair cars and it wasn't brought into me for a quote and I agree - if I took it in somewhere I'd expect a better analysis and estimate.

I had this problem and it comes from bottom the ball joint under the brake disk on the outside of the car. I tried spraying the general area with WD40 but this wont work that well as the creaking is actually coming from inside the rubber drying out, ( I think i caused alot of this myself by blasting under the car with a jet washer, so try not to do this) You can replace these parts if you want to part with alot of your coin............or do what i did which is jack the car up and put full lock on so you can get under one corner of the car and see the offending joint (the bottom one) now if you look you will see the rubber housing where the noise is coming from. Now bear in mind these are not buggered as the garage will tell you, but are only faulty as they are making the noise, they still work fine and are safe and will not fail an MOT as there is no play in them, they're just dried out. Get some spray grease (NOT WD40 This time, this is too thin) in a can with a straw, take a pin and prick a small hole in the rubber housing, put the straw thru the rubber and spray away, filling the ball joint with grease (or even better a syringe with grease in) When you pull the straw out clean the hole and put a small dot of glue on the hole (if you can see it that is) just to seal it. Do the same to the other side and job done, drop the car back on its feet take it for a spin and the creaking will stop as soon as the car has been bouced about a bit to get the grease in the right places. I did this 3 months ago now and still no creaking!!! Give it a shot, its an hours easy work and will save you £££££££££££

Hi, Just an FYI for everyone reading this. WD-40 is for displacing water (Water Displacement – 40th Attempt), its not a great lubricant and could dry out and perish rubber parts over time. It does contain a small amount of mineral oil, but it is over 50% solvent, the oil is there to help the solvent get to where it needs to be to displace the water. Hope this helps. M

Hi Silv

Had exactly the same thing with my yr-2000 Boxster S last year - squeaks and creaks from the front suspension, especially in warmer weather. The issue was worn front lower control arms and worn bushes. The part itself isn't that expensive (£120 each) but it will take a couple hours in labour to remove all the neccessary parts to replace them. You might want to also upgrade to Powerflex bushes while you have the suspension out - much more durable and a better ride.

If you need any more advice, suggest calling Ollie at RPM Technick - http://www.rpmtechnik.co.uk/ - they've been looking after my cars for years

Did you consider just replacing the control arm bushes with powerflex bushes which would have enabled you to keep the existing arms?

You can just replace the bushes themselves, but you would need a press and they're a bh to get out.

I'd get a geo done too once you've replaced the bushes. Chris at CG did my 996 front and back a couple of years back. Creaking all gone. The rubber bushes delaminate, replaced with a superior rubber from Powerflex.

I'd agree with baptistsan - had the Geo done afterwards and made a huge difference. Drives like a completely different car.

That is probable cause of a squeak, a rattle is very different. Total cost for one arm should be no more than £240, but the two should bring the cost down a bit on the labour, £420 inclusive should be achievable.

Wow! I did this using an aerosol can of white litium grease, didn't need a straw at the can has a plastic delivery tube, and a couple of miles later the squeak was gone! Thanks

What about the hole in the rubber boot thing though-or did it seal itself?

What did you use to make the hole?
