Couple of coolant questions
Discussion
1) Noticed the last couple of times that i have driven the car (and prior to driving it) that the coolant level is low so i will obviously need to top it up. Is it normal for coolant levels to drop and if so how often do people usually top theirs up, i appreciate some people probably never need to??
2) Can you buy the correct coolant from Halfords, mine is orange. If so, is there anything i need to know??
I havent driven the car much during the past few weeks and dont know if this has an affect or not, there is no evidence of leaks and my temperatures remian consistent when i have driven it so im not worried about anything more sinister.

NO! Don't mix n match coolant, it's not all the same technology and I think one causes the other to drop out of solution. Someone will be along shortly to tell you exactly why I'm sure.
what he said, not sure the chemistry but they do not mix, you end up with sticky sludge...
Also, do not keep adding water above the min mark, it will only push it out when hot.
I have spoken to the dealership and they have told me to top it up to the half way mark and monitor it for a week. If it goes down then i should bring the car in for them to look at.
The left hand side of the tank is full( the thin part) but the main body of the tank now has about an inch in it where previously it was half full.

Youre alright mixing coolants of the same colour. It is when they are a different colour you get problems.
Was going to say, just top it up with water and keep an eye on it for the next few weeks. Mine sits near min mark and doesnt shift, even after a very hard track day. Check in the front crash structure for wet patches as if it isnt HGF then this is the most likely place it will be loosing it!

Surely wont be HGF after 19k miles??Was going to say, just top it up with water and keep an eye on it for the next few weeks. Didnt realise you had a 111R. Well, pretty sure it aint the HG then!
Just look under the car for any signs of leaks after its been parked. Id say the most likely place for it to loose coolant will be the heater matrix. To be honest mate, Ive no experience of Toyota coolant systems. Ive got a k, and have had the front end off 3 times sorting leaks with it.
If there are no leaks noticable, and it isnt leaking into the engine somewhere, Im stumped. Could it be a leak round water pump? DOnt know.
My advice is as above, the same as dealer. Just top up with water (when its cold obviously) and keep an eye on it.

I only noticed a couple of days ago cos i havent had a chance to drive it recently, cant say i have noticed any wet patches in my garage but i will have a look later. I had a quick look at the hoses coming out of it this morning and they all seem fine.Just look under the car for any signs of leaks after its been parked. Well.I guess the s2 might have similar behavior as the s1 when it comes to coolant levels.Mine has been sitting at the minimum for almost 3 years now. In the beginning I tried topping it up,but it would just end up at the minimum again.

Something very strange is going on with my coolant. Just checked it before i was leaving work and there was virtually nothing in it but when i eventually got home it was back to the minimum levels again?? Any answers to that one?
Make sure your coolant pressure cap is on tight, and is operating correctly. I had exactly the same thing on mine. When I checked the engine hot, I could hear a small hissing. Soon as I tightened the cap, the coolant levels stayed at the same level! JTBUSH said:

When it comes to service they would be very difficult to beat.
Ay, me too. I always love having a sit in the Nobles. Last time I was there some bloke was trying to buy my Dads car. Hes got a scooby and we had gone in that. There was a bloke next to it when we came back from the test drive checking tyre depths and giving the body work a good looking over. He looked quite upset when my Dad told him it wasnt for sale!
