Following on from the other thread about the service interval indicator.

I've got a new S3, and if you scroll through the menus to find out when a service is due, it says oil change due in 5100miles, and service due in 17100 miles.

Does this mean I can get the oil changed by anyone (inc myself) and not need a stamp in the book to maintain full audi history as long as when it says service due I take it to an audi dealer, or is 'oil change' just a way of saying minor service?

Will it automatically detect that I have changed the oil and then reset the oil change due indicator, or is there some procedure that you have to do to reset the indicator?

The manual makes no mention of this 'oil change due' interval, and only talks about service due.

I've been unable to get a clear answer out of my audi dealer, they didnt seem to know about the oil change due indicator, they said usually only the R models have this interim oil change.

I dont fancy being ripped off by audi just for an oil change if I can take it anywhere, assuming I use the correct oil.

The oil change light has to be reset with a diagnostic machine to keep it on the correct intervals but they are not exclusive to Audi as we have one that can do it (we do a lot of fleet cars which are VAG group).

Are you on fixed service intervals, it sounds like you may be?

I've got a 1.8TT and my wife has a 2 litre turbo A3 (almost a de-tuned S3 engine) and both are on variable service. Never seen anything for an oil change on either. Both just have services. The oil is tested automatically to provide a service interval and does not get changed in between.

Perhaps this is 'Audi language' for major and minor services when you are on a fixed interval?

Sorry can't help any more.

Your cars on an 8 chassis isnt it. You'll have to take it to audi as its a new servicing plan and i doubt the light can be reset by local garages. Bascically means, you just get an oil change at so many miles and then an inspection service later on, where theyll check over the car and change filters etc.

The car is a 6month old 8P (ie the new shape) S3.

Not on fixed intervals, the dealer checked that when I queried what this 'oil change due' thing meant, plus the mileage left does vary.

From talking to other owners I believe it was introduced for the MY08 S3 onwards (along with other things like the needle sweep on start up), and the MY07 just had the normal 'service due' indicator (but perhaps with a different program to determine when to give it a service).

If it is, as many people suggest, just another phrase for interim service, then why does it distinguish itself from the normal service?

And if its technically not a service then it shouldnt warrant a stamp in the book , then I'd rather take it to my friendly mechanic rather than be screwed by audi.

I suspect I'll not get a definitive answer, and I'll just end up taking it to audi for an oil change and be charged £200 for the privilege just to be on the safe side and to keep the car with a full Audi Service history.

Its a bit annoying though when you do all your research before you buy it that states a service is every two years or between 12000-18000 miles. But when you get the car it says it needs an oil change at 1 year or around 9000 miles, and then a service at 3 years, or around 18000 miles. And I presume that when I have an oil change it will tell me I need another one in 12 months again . So you effectively go from 2 year service interval to yearly.

Would you really want to leave it 2 years without changing the oil?

Like i said we can reset it with our machine (omnitec)you just go into the adaptions, its a long winded way to do it but easily done.
