Can anyone reconmend a place where i can get my 316i compact remapped in the South Wales area? I have just bought the car but haven't picked it up yet.
Had to get a 316i though as i couldnt really afford the insurance on anything else!
I heard that the 1.6's are acturally 1.9's but de-tuned is this right? I'm new to BMW's and really dont know anything about them (I'm a Honda man really) so any help would be great

Dont bother, I got a 316SE(1.9) and it is detuned for a reason: economical family/rep run about.
Even if you remapped the engine it still wont be fast by any stretch of the imagination. The amount of times I've been left at the lights or motorway mid gear drag is embarrasing, usually by small diesels.
If you wanted a fast car you should have got one, I will be doing in the next few months. E46 M3..etc..etc

I didnt really buy it to be a skyline killer just as something that looks fairly nice drives well and got a bit of grunt.
Its not going to be as fast as my civic was (and that wasnt exactly fast) and i know my 'lude would leave it standing.
I'm going to be running it on LPG so MPG really isnt an issue here :P
Just wondered if it was worth remapping it what sort of gains would i expect? is it worth doing?

One thing to remember here you say its a compact so its at least 5 years old at this price range the difference for a bigger/more powerfull engine is not very much.
If you do remap it and as you said you couldnt afford the insurance on the bigger engines then there is a wake up call here - Ins comps really hammer you if you remap cars these days making it MUCH more expensive than the equivalent higher powered Std car.
The age old rule applies here - "If you wanted a fast car buy one in the first place". & if you cannot afford that yet then save up and wait until you can.

I'm going to run this until im 21 and then look at getting a Integra Type R by then the premiums should have dropped a bit
I dont really want it to be amazingly fast but anywhere from 120-140 bhp would be nice

You will not even notice the difference - I would recomend that instead you only ever fill your fuel tank half full that way your power to weight on average will be higher. + save you £ in the process.
£300 would be cash down the drain.
To expect 120-140 thats a 20-40% increase on a normally aspired engine from a remap is NEVER going to happen. Turbo cars yes 20% and maybe even 30% but thats pushing reliability so parts would have to be uprated. All this adds to a huge hike in premiums - when you could have bought the 318 compact insteador even the 320i and thats 170bhp out of the box.

Ok cheers for the info guys 300 quid for a gain that puney really isnt worth it.
Correct and nor is a new "sports" exhaust nor K&N air box etc.Just keep it std its a good A-B car run it like that, come the next car IF you want a fast car then buy a fast car to start with dont go down the route of modifying as inveriably you will not upgrade the brakes/suspension/gearbox/clutch/discs/pads/headlight bulbs

This is a good point. The aditional insurance premium on a chipped car is often more than if you were insuring a car a couple of notches up the scale on a faster car. If a chip (or any mod) is not declared you are paying a premium but not insured. Always declare every modification - I know some smart arse will come along soon and say well I fitted different tyres to that what came with the car hence its a modification... or I use Vmax over std fuel hence modification... etc.

Just out of interest anyone got a link to the performance figures of a 316i compact?

Why would you convert a 316i Compact to LPG?
Why not?LPG is cheap as hell to buy (we have our own tank at home)
I also already have the kit off my civic to go on it so wont cost me a penny to convert it
