ECON button what does it do???

Hello All,
Have a friend who has a mk4 golf GTTDi who want's to know what this button does, do you have to press this to turn off the air conditioning?? Thanks for your help in advance

If it says ECON on the display it means that the AC is OFF.
Get your mate to check the cooling fans work correctly.

When AUTO is pressed they should BOTH run constantly on slow speed. If they run fast, then stop, the run fast again, or, if they don't run at all, the internal resistor is burnt out and the fans will need changing. Budget £200 each fan at VW.

It is basically an on or off switch for the air conditioning compressor.
