Yeah normally the check-in person will either assign you a low clearance part of the boat if it's obvious you need it or they will ask if they're not sure.
When you get to the boarding ramp they have wooden ramps that they bring out to get you onto the ferry without damaging the front of the car.
The crews on the boats are normally very helpful and know all the places where you might ground so when your getting on and off so if you take it slowly they'll normally watch the front of the car for you to make sure you'll be ok.

Being a bit of a geek, I happen to know that photobucket uses 'th_' at the front of photos to signify the thumbnail version.
Full size picture would be the above link, minus the 'th_', inside [Pic] tags (you can find how to use them by clicking 'formatting help' above the text box when you add replies to topics.

In 2003 I was behind an F40 on the Portsmouth to cherbourg route. The guys on the docks were 1st class and realy took there time making sure the F40 would be ok, as the car came up the ramp the driver was told to wait on one side, they contuined loading up the other cars then very carefully they loaded the F40. It went in almost last and came off the sea cat 1st 
but my MG midget is low - and ferry guys always seem more than helpful. At least on mine I can hang out the door and see underneath...ands its only a 1.99 exhaust clamp that gets hit if I get it wrong Agree, most of the ferry companies are really helpful with ramps, block, etc.
They'll usually make sure your car goes on a deck level with the loading doors, so no internal stuff to negotiate either.
Slightly off-topic, but I did know someone with and F40 a few years ago who had to leave it 1/2 mile down a restaurant driveway as it wouldn't go over their speed-humps
Which is a bloody good reason for banning humps, I reckon!
