I have this engine in my Octavia vRS. Still covered less than 1,000 miles and getting bizarre fuel returns.

On Friday night I drove over from Lincoln to Manchester. A 1hr 45mins trip. Along the A1, M62, M60. Keeping the speed between 70-75 mph. This was being carful, smooth gear changes, no sharp take offs etc. Averaged 47 mpg.

Last night I set off back to Lincoln, exactly the same route but in reverse. This time keeping up with traffic, averaging between 80-90 mph. Not being smooth in any way, quick take offs, changing down to over take on the single carriagway NSL areas, yet my average mpg was 49mpg!

The question is why? It seems that if you drive it hard you get better returns, anyone else noticed this with the same engine?

Take the example of a pulse switched power supply against an old analogue power supply. The PSU is more efficient.

It is more efficient to go full-on / full off rather than partially on all the time. However there are limits to the application of this.

An engine guru will along soon to flame this post.

My A6 3.0tdi is more fuel efficient at 80mph than it is a 55 mph.

Did you have the Aircon on/off, I've noticed on my Seat Leon 150TDI, the Aircon can make as much as 4-5 mpg difference?

I have that engine in my A4 Avant & over 35000 miles have only averaged 36mpg. Only once ever seen better than 41 mpg average on a journey.

I used the aircon on the way back but not on the way there. Seemed better economy when using aircon! wobble

I'm interested in re-mapping it. Superchips seem to do the bluefin for that engine. Anyone used one?

I would reccomend a specialist over Superchips, lots of threads on here recently with feedback for QST, MRC, AMD, Revo...

A lot of them don't offer a remap on this engine because of the diesel particle filter. I asked at my local Skoda dealer who do Revo remaps and they don't offer one on that particular engine. I know superchips do and I know of someone whos bought the Bluefin which remaps to around 200PS, but I've heard bad things about Sueprchips in general.

my golf is better at 75mph than 70mph for some daft reason, bang on 2000rpm seems to suit it best

I use the M62 which is very moutainous. That could have something to do with it. Maybe more down bits than up on the way back.
