Rev Limiter - is there one?

Have done some spirited recently and I was wondering is there a rev limiter like on 'normal' cars?
What is it? Is it a hard limit (ie you suddenly loose power)?
Will my engine eat itself if I hit it?
If the answer might be yes can I manually lower it to something I can bounce off?
Sorta scarewd of venturing up there at the moment.
2000, Mk 1, 4.0, non 'S' - with 2005 TVR Power Rebuild

I've only hit the limiter once or twice before, to be honest there isnt much more power to be had past 7000/7200 rpm anyway (on the 4.0l cars)
It wasnt pretty when I did hit it, sudden loss of power/acceleration, nearly headbutted the steering wheel, followed by a sudden burst of acceleration again. All happened quicker that I could lift my foot off the loud pedal!
I have my change up light set to red at 6000rpm now, makes for a bit more mechanical sympathy and phycologically I think Im ragging the nuts off it as I go "into the red" on a regular basis!
Always cool seeing the red shift up light too! except when its dark, its so bright it blinds you a bit!

Don't go there too often and ensure all is serviced well and the revs are used when oil is hot 70 degrees + and it should not be a huge issue.

Mechanical problems aside the speed six must have been truly impressive in its day!!
Where is the max torque?
