How tight are your cylinder heads bolts!

Not as tight as mine I can assure you!



3 sockets broken! They aren't great quality ones but nevertheless you just would not believe how tight they are.
I've never broken a socket before.

Also rounded off 2 of the head bolts - ended up drilling them out - mission successful one head now removed.

Now I need to remove the other head!

Don't have this problem on a V6

I've never broken a socket in my life. Usually the bolt shears first so these must be some very hi-tensile bolts or those sockets are made of cheese.

I put a hell of a lot of force onto the bolts - I'm surprised one didn't snap off, which now makes me think maybe I should drill them out - they are soft enough to drill with a bit of effort since I knackered two of them.
They are later type cylinder head stretch bolts (part number is on the bolt head).

The impressively broken socket on the right was a draper, middle one kingcraft whoever they are but I've used the set alot, and the left one a cheapo unbranded thing which seemed to hold up the best.

I've ordered a 16mm impact socket with a 3/4" female to 1/2" male adaptor so I can use my 1 metre breaker bar.

I think it's more a case of 'how cheap are your sockets!'.

Get to Halfords and buy 10 of their 'Professional' range. Break as many as you like, because they're guaranteed for life. Keep the receipt and take back/exchange all the ones you haven't used (which at the end should be 9!). It just saves a lot of travelling around and you'll only end up paying for 1 no matter how many you smash.

My S2 ones came off without any problems at all!

What are you going to torque them to on rebuild?
