Mr DVLA has replied

Well Mr DVLA finally wrote back - after the surgery I've had you cannot drive for 12 months - black and white there's no negotiation. (Craniotomy if you want to go and google)

This means I cannot drive until next April

But leaves some time for the V8S refurb!
