My rears are getting a bit thin and my local tyre place wants £150 each for Pirelli P6000s (225/55 ZR 16) - ouch. Sure I could shop around a bit I can get a pair a little cheaper but still - ouch.

Should I stick with this tyre or is there any real alternative?

I've kept to the P6000s on mine, but I'm sure I've never paid anything like that much for them. Off the top of my head I think I paid about £100 each at the local place in the village.

Replaced the two rears on my S-Type 4.2 SE last week...£180 a corner for P6000s, same as the previous set. Amazing that someone gets them for maybe £100 each: where?

I bought mine at Total Tyres in Binfield.
I can't remember when I changed them.

Black Circles

list them at £113

Black Circles are usually pretty competitive. IIRC there's a voucher somewhere on Honest John's website - www.honestjohn.co.uk - for a further 5% discount too.

Might be worth Googling your tyre size just to see what comes up - you could always print off some quotes and then challenge your local tyre fitters to beat them.

Voucher used to be 'pistonheads' - doesn't seem to work now.

I've run Goodyears for 100k on my X308ov. They last at least 20k, (rears longer) and with the exception of the last two which i needed quicky have been between 75-90 a tyre

You're right... I've just had another look for it too. I was going to use that just as soon as I've made my mind up what to buy banghead

I had an X300 XJ Sport a few years ago and would recommend absolutely any other tyre than the P6000 (check out the Jag lovers site).

Noisy, poor grip and (worse of all) a tendency to go out for round if the car was sitting for a while.

I've got Vredstein Ultrac Sessanta's on my X308 XJR and would recommend them over any of Pirelli's offerings for the car.

Nope, I've run P6000 on my X300 for the last 12 years and I don't recognise any of those symptoms. OK I've not tried anything else on the car, but...
My car often goes weeks at a time when I don't get to drive her, but no problems with the tyres going out of shape.
The misses runs a MB E320CDi and the Jag on the P6000s is much quieter than the Merc.
Now when Car originally reviewed the X300 against the E-Class and the 5 series they commented that the Merc was noisy and put it down to the P6000s the test car was fitted with, but commented that the X300 was much the quietest of the trio, yet it was fitted with the P6000s too.
I don't find there is any lack of grip on them either.

Perhaps I should try the car of different tyres, but I've never found a problem with the P6000s so I've never felt inclined to risk wasting my money on any thing else.

i used to swear by p6000s, but i got a good deal on some michelin sports, they have much better grip, especialy in the wet, they wear better than the p6000s too, two of the most important cosiderations when buying a tyre dont u think

Same thing happend to me with a almost new P6000, you could actually see the bulge in the tread when you spun the wheel round and I know it hadn't been kerbed or damaged, just left standing for a couple of weeks.

I don't need a high performance tyre, and am looking for comfort and a quiet ride with good life.
Anyone got any suggestions?
