I've just come off a two year ban for dangerous driving. Ive been driving tvr's for quite a few years and have owned 5 in total. I've been missing it all and now that dreaded time has arrived. How impossible is it going to be to get one again.

I am 35 years old with 16 years previous driving experience so now I have 0 no claims bonus. My better half has full no claims so I was thinking about putting it in her name an me be a named driver.

I was previously insured with manning on the last few so am not sure what to do.

Any advice would be appreciated. I don't want to have to wait another 3 years until the DD40 comes off!!

cheers

Not wanting to pry but a two year ban for driving dangerously must have resulted from some significantly naughty driving. Perhaps you could do some advanced driver training to demonstrate that you are no longer a danger on the road.

You need to be careful if you are putting your "better half" down as main driver and yourself as a named driver.
Some friends of mine did this and unfortunately had an accident that wrote off their car. The driver during this incident was the "named driver" and when the insurance company did a bit of checking, they discovered that the named driver had driven the car more than the main driver. As a result, they voided the policy and my friends got nothing!
Moral of the story is that main driver is just that, so that would mean that your partner drives the TVR more than you do!

I'd hate to think how much the insurance will be if you try to get cover now but take heed of the above warnings about putting someone else as the main driver. You'll of course be declaring the ban for a good couple of years after the actual penalty has been removed from your licence.

Hi all,

Long story but will cut short. I was involved in a bad car accident a few years ago in the cerbera. A silly women pulled out in front of me as she was just coming off the exit slip road. I was in her blind spot. She was doing 40mph and I was doing about 80-85mph. No chance what so ever, I tried to brake but it was impossible. Ended up getting a broken pelvis, got knocked out and spun the car. I had to be cut out of it which meant it was a right off.
I had my friend behind me in his tvr but as usual the police didn't believe the tvr drivers so we took it all the way to crown court and unfortunately I lost. Been a bad two years living with no TVR and ended up with this for something that wasn't even my fault. Good eh!!!

We soldier on which is why I really want to get back in one.

I hope this clears a few things up.

cheers

Without any doubt. Before I lost my insurance I had to declare it as a pending conviction for the DD40 (which is the same as actually having it) and before with the following it was about £1100 for a 4.5 cerbera.

3 years no claims
SP30 3 points
DD40 pending conviction
£35000 accident claim ( which has now come off)

Cheers

Its not been the best couple of years. Pretty much everything went wrong. Get the next few weeks out of the way and I will back on the road again soon. Can you imagine two years without the sound of a tvr roaring in your gargage every weekend.

My little girl who is 6 always came the meets and loved it. Now my 2 year old son would be in his element.

Hopefully it won't be long

I guess you should just call around & see what they say. I'm sure you'll get insured but expect it to be expensive, that way it might be better than you think.
Not the same situation, but about 4 years back a mate of mine in a fit of idiocy got done drink driving & banned for 12 months. A month or so later he got himself done for drink driving whilst banned for drink driving (!!!) & got his ban extended to 18 months. When he was finally back in the driving seat, he got insured on his '89 Corvette & it cost him 5 grand (about the value of the car)!!! Before the conviction it was about 1500.

What! how much. I did a quote with tesco with the insurance in my partners name and me a named driver. The quote was £950 and that was with the DD40. Without the conviction it was £599.

I spoke to A Manning and they said it would be ok to mirror her no claims, have the insurance in her name and me a named driver. So all not lost thank god.

Cant wait to get back and press that START button!!!!

Graham - remember that that is not the same as you being the main driver. If you are going to be the main driver then I'm guessing that the insurance won't be anything like as competitive. Will you be the main driver?

Scary in some respects (that doesn't mean wrong!) that you can get covered for only fractionally more than I'm paying with 3pts on a ZT260 frown My TVR is £300 but that's classic insurance.

My sympathies lie with you, if what happened was as you've described.

Of all the stupidity that I witness on the roads every day, these dozy sliproad slowcoaches are my pet hate !

THEY should be banned from the roads for the chaos they cause. furious

I agree. The driver that pulled out was a nervous woman driver (not meaning to be sexest). And milked for all its worth!

In three years lost tvr, got broken pelvis in accident, lost business and lost house.

They say things happen in three's. Not in my case. More the reason why I must get back in a TVR again.

Police and TVR's never mix. Never trust them again. Sounds bad but I am going from experience.

Nearly getting there!!!

Well, best of luck to you.

I wrote off my first Lotus Seven quite a few years ago, and the police prosecutor had a similarly biased attitude.

I hired a specialist driving offence lawyer, and also cross-examined witnesses myself. Result: 'case-dismissed', and my insurance company picked up the bill.

Oh, and IMO 90% of female drivers should stick to pushing prams instead of clogging up the roads. getmecoat

My thoughts exactly, but didn't like to say in so many words.
Wasn't sure how many female TVR drivers there are out there.

One 'incident' does not make you a bad driver, especially as you've been driving TVRs for years.
Sounds a lot like my situation and i ended up with a cd30.
A few companies wont want to know, but some think everyone deserves a second chance, and you should get someone to quote reasonably - I was certainly pleasantly surprised!
To play safe, I went for an older Griff 500 and got Heritage classic insurance for around £500 - then moved on to Cerb and now Tuscan with most willing to quote on renewal!
Good luck and let us know how you fair...

I have to go for a cerb as I have two kids. They wouldn't talk to me for years if I left them at home.

My two year old son has never experienced the fun of TVR's so I can't wait to share it with him.

My six year old daughter spent the first few years with knowing tvr's and she loved it. She used to always say:

Pop pop pop all the time and laugh everytime I revved it.

Oh how I miss it so!!!
