320D SE with 90000 miles on the clock.
Was planning to do the service myself. Is there anything I should be on the lookout for?
Apart from the usual
Plugs
Oil
and filters?
If you service it yourself you'll make it very hard to sell on. A 320D SE also doesn't have spark plugs...Was planning to do the service myself. Is there anything I should be on the lookout for?

It can't be worth that much now at 6 years old with 90000 on the clock?
Agreed. If you can find a copy on the internet of what is required for relevant Inspection (1, 2 or Oil Service) you could use this as a check list.It can't be worth that much now at 6 years old with 90000 on the clock?
Get onto www.bmwland.co.uk and find instructions on cleaning the EGR filter & valve.
I understand that this is worthwhile doing.

It's probably still worth more than a new Supermini - about £7-9k if its an 02 with 90k.It can't be worth that much now at 6 years old with 90000 on the clock?
It's probably only due an oil service is it not? You can get these for about £130 at a BMW Main dealer, why cheap out?

so all in your saving £100 for what 5 mins work result. Also the number of places who say they have changed your oil filter & not done it is shocking.
It will not damage your service history given you keep all those receipts to effectively create your own service history minus the stamp.
6 year old 320d Se 90k... you are looking much nearer the low 7k mark in all reality.
For me I always buy cars max price £7k and they are usually 6years old - I then service it myself, firstly I know the job has been done + not spend anything on the labour + enjoy it + I always keep my cars until they die so its neither here or there as regard to the service history - mind you I keep all receipts of parts/fluids used.
Oil from Costco is not 15 quid at all, the 320d requires BMW LL01 approved oil.
I shopped around on the net for mine - Castrol Edge TD 0w30 - and it still came to 80 quid just for the oil. I think you can get the Mobil 1 5w40 a bit cheaper but it's still a good 50 quid.
Why do people buy these cars if they can't afford to run them?

Not wishing to pay exorbitant dealer prices is not the same as being unable to afford to run the car.An oil change at a dealer is £100 just for the oil. £15+vat * 5.5 litres.
Add the filter and labour and it comes closer to £200, plus the hassle of dropping the car off and collecting.
To top it off, you can bet the lowest qualified 'technician' is going to work on your car and will be aiming to get it in and out in the shortest possible time.
At 6 years old and approaching 100k, a dealer stamp isn't going to make much difference to the value. I'd certainly have a go myself.

It certainly is £15 as I have recently bought a trade pack and checked the prices. I have 2* 4.5 ltr Castrol Magnatec.I shopped around on the net for mine - Castrol Edge TD 0w30 - and it still came to 80 quid just for the oil. Mobil One 0w40 is at the £15-16 markboth diesel & petrol.
Ive heard all this nonsense about using special oils in the engine i.e. the VAG PD specific oil.... well all I care for is the viscosity & change on 10-12k. I ran a Golf GT TDi 115 for 70oddk and serviced it myself and always used noraml oil the current owner has & is doing exactly the same & now its nearing 140k.... so its all marketing bumf.
Magnetec is the wrong oil for this engine so its price is academic. The m47 requires oil approved to bmw LL01 spec. This is a tad more than 15 quid. A proper oil service is nowhere near 200 quid- i paid my main dealer 130 for mine. Do it properly, your car is a tad more complex than a cheap Escort so dont run it as if it is one.

I don't agree, you undo the sump bolt, take the filter off, wait until all the oil comes out put the sump bolt back in with a new washer fit a new BMW filter and fill with oil.Exactly the same as if you'd done it on an escort.
If you take you car to a main dealer for a oil change who do you think does it the tech with 10 years experience or the 17 year old apprentise. I guess at the second
I'm not saying the main dealer would do a better job becuase they quite obviously wouldnt more that the saving is less than the amount of money it will knock off the value of your car.
To change the oil with the RIGHT oil, ie Castrol Edge 0w30 turbodiesel LL01/LL04, is going to cost you about 80 in PARTS.
To get it done by BMW will be about £130 all in - so only an extra fifty quid for the sake of keeping up the service history.
Heck Scothall Southampton are doing a ServicePlus scheme for 6+ year old cars where they will give you 50% off labour and 30% off oil making an oil service for a 4 cylinder 3 Series only £80.
Is it REALLY worth getting all dirty and compromising your cars history just to save a few pennies?

Ok if you really want to keep your full service BMW history then get the oil/basic service done by them - however things like Brake pads/brake discs/suspension/exhaust etc i.e. everything not on za std service can be done by yourself. To change the oil with the RIGHT oil, ie Castrol Edge 0w30 turbodiesel LL01/LL04, is going to cost you about 80 in PARTS.

Oh I quite agree, you'd need to be made of money to take it to BMW for discs and pads but the basic service schedule based stuff is reasonably priced.[TW]Fox said:

Also if your going to keep the car until it dies then its hardly an issue.
ALso another thing to consider is if you do the work yourself clearly you save on the labour - some jobs may require you to buy a new tool which you can offset against their labour costs, you take a hit on its residual value.
My dad always buys cars 2 months old and runs them for 15-20 years He has NEVER has them serviced as he does all the work himself. Warranty well thats a moot point & one I have raised but in 60 years he has NEVER has any need for warranty claims.
Some may post here why not buy a 5 year old car for half the cost, blah blah blah - yes that makes sense but if your buying at that age it will be well used and may need a fair bit of work doing on it in the not too near future - by buying effectively brand new there is only the basic oil & filter changes to be done for the first 4 odd years (so much less work) by the 5th year discs & pads. To be honest the only non simple service item to fix so far on the Mk4 Golf TDI is a wheel bearing which was a sod to do without a proper press.

Despite this the seller still wants top money for it.
Just curious, doesn't your comment about people buying cars they cannot afford to run apply to those not having repairs done at BMW too ?

If say the car was a further 4 years older so a 10+ year old car would you still then get it Main Dealer Serviced?
There is certainly a point where the age of the car makes Main dealer SH worthless.
There is a point - it's entirely subjective where the point lies but I suspect it isnt when the car is still worth about 7 grand which to most people is still a fairly large amount of money. There is certainly a point where the age of the car makes Main dealer SH worthless.

If you're getting stuff done away from the dealer its not quite service history then is it ?[quote]Just curious, doesn't your comment about people buying cars they cannot afford to run apply to those not having repairs done at BMW too ?
I'm not saying the market is right but many people will look at a car owned by someone who has done it himself just to save a few quid (As I have highlighted the saving is not significant) and will ask what else he's bodged in the interests of saving money.
You and you alone know how capable a mechanic are. Nobody else does and nobody will assume you are competent when they come to buy your car.

On cars of this value & age you simply do the basics and do them well - only replace other parts when they fail. The objective with buying a 6 year old £7k car is to get at least 7 MOT's out of it if possible with the least expenditure. I would envisage 2 sets of tyres & one set of pads&discs over that time, apart from that just normal basic servicing. You may need a battery but you only replace that when its had it
