VXR8 - loud clicking / jangling noise from front offside
Discussion
Got the car booked in to the local "specialist", so thought I'try and get any pointers to help them ! Over rough tarmac, particularly badly surface-dressed area's, I get loud clicking / jangling from what appears to be the front offside corner. It fades on braking - so I assume it's brake related. Just wondered if anyone else has had anything similar ?
Good point - I'll get that checked. I listened very carefully tonight with both windows open and it seems to be coming from both sides of the car, but goes away under braking. So I'm beginning to wonder if it's something like the anti roll bar that's quietening down with the weight transfer under braking. What I do know for certain is that it's driving me mad !
I had it checked out a few weeks ago and the garage couldn't replicate the noise. So they had a butchers at the knowledge base and it turns out that some customers have complained of a knocking noise similar to "striking a heavy piece of timber and experienced generally when both wheels strike the object simultaneously". The remedy is an engine mount revision that features a one way by-pass valve with revised oil channel design.
I don't think this would solve my issue, but might be something to do with your plastic banging noise Ringram. For information it's Technical Information Bulletin Ref no. 07-TI-40.

Hmm - interesting. Mine goes "clunk" every now and then. Hitting a piece of timber is a good analogy.
The anti roll bar shouldn't be too much affected by braking (kinda the point) so should still be floating
I think I get this too from time to time - but the idea of having one of the highly regarded "specialists" fit new engine mounts leaves me feeling cold. The anti roll bar shouldn't be too much affected by braking (kinda the point) so should still be floating

There is a small rubber washer/spacer that can split at the bottom of the spring mount. It happened to mine and it sounded like a clunk as I used to hit a small dip in my drive. Cheap as to fix.
DO you have any more details? easy to do?

I'll ask my mate who fixed it (he's one of the mechanics at my local Holden dealer Giltrap Holden). I'll try and get a photo of where its located as it sounds like this is the issue these guys are facing. I kept thinking I was hitting a bit of wood or something up my drive (even got out to check a couple of times)
Car went in today. Turned out to be the inner pad that was rattling. So they greased the contact points and it seems OK so far.
Interestingly while I was there there were 2 Monaro's with badly worn engines. One of them had it's engine out and the head off - the technician showed me the wear in the bore - unbelievable amount of piston slap. He put it down to poor oil (or lack of). Also a VXR8 on a 57 plate with big miles that was equally suffering from lack of oil. I don't understand how people can buy cars like these and not look after them !

What worries me is, why Mobil 1? that oil is a race bred oil for high reving engines, it takes a lot of warming up before you can even give the beast the beans. Our V8's are slow reving so why not an oil that can cope with that, especialy for road going applications. So how many RPM's do you pull at 70?Interestingly while I was there there were 2 Monaro's with badly worn engines. The way a lot of our low mileage engines rattle, I think maybe a little more attention to quality control in manafacture, and a little less in blaming the owner might be closer to the mark.

Millers XFS I use as was told the CFS was better suited to forced induction engines - course I'll need to change now I've got the blower to fit.
CFS is the better in big V8s according to the Techies at Millers I was advised 7 or so years ago despite advise in their literature, and have used it ever since in a variety of seriously quick cars with zero problems compared to oils I used before. I have N/A, Turbo and Supercharged cars currently running on it, have done a lot of track days etc plus road miles. Monkfish told me my Holden they have tuned was the quietest they had ever heard, another plus for it
