Epoxy mastic coating for chassis?

Can anyone tell me what type of epoxy mastic white paint I should be using to coat the areas of my chassis I have taken back to bare metal? I assume it should be the same as what TVR used... Is there a particular make to use? If so, where can I buy it?

Do you need to prime first? I will be using whatever is the best rust inhibitor on the bare metal/pitted metal first obviously.

Personally I wire brush it, use RustEater on the bare metal, then when dry I use white Hammerite.

Don't use hammerite, it's simply too brittle when fully cured, and chips very easily. The only time I've had good results with hammerite was when I did the following: Black clean, etch prime, standard primer, 3 x thin coats of hammerite.

I used Epoxy Mastic and so far, seems to be okay.

Followed by a Zinc-based cold galvanising paint

I've just been nosing around the Frosts website and found everything I need.

Marine clean, metal ready, POR15 rust prevention paint in gray, and to finish, a coat or two of Hard Nose paint in white.
That lot should shut the rust up once and for all

I'm just about to shot blast my chassis and am tearing my hair out to decide what I want to use.

Hard nose paint looks good but they don't do white.

"Hi Richard
I would make sure that you get all the powder coat off, it may take time but it’ll be worth it. If you’re thorough with your blasting you may not need Deox Gel - I would use crushed glass grit as the mediums like copper and coal contain heavy metals that can cause accelerated corrosion if embedment occurs – then coat with Electrox, once that’s cured I would use a paintable anti stone-chip coating, this will provide defense against stone damage - which I think causes chassis deterioration at the extremities on these cars. You can overcoat this with a colour of your choice. This is a good option for anti-corrosion, but it may not be the best aesthetically. For that you could leave the stone chip coating and topcoat direct to the Electrox, but I would still use an anti corrosion wax at the outriggers etc as it’ll help prevent re rusting.

The products look good and get good reviews just by searching within PH.

BUT, still not sure what to use to get the white chassis colour. I was thinking Hammerite but I don't know.

If you want to preserve your chassis why do you guys talk of doing what TVR did or coat with paints that are marketed to satisfy your interest.

Hammerite and powder coat are not always the best options. They suffer from extreme heat and chip badly if not eched properly, I've not seen a really good powder cost for years that doesn't chip easily. A powder coated metal hit with a fast moving object will chip leaving exposed metal to rust. OK it looks nice and gives a smooth finish but is not always the best option for your chassis long term.

Anyway, just my thoughts on the matter....no need to shoot me down in flames its just my opinion.

Why dont you galvanise the chassis if you've gone to this much trouble ?.Dare say there is a reason why not due to heat issues regarding the process.As for Hammerite it was brill years ago,but now it is ste.Halfords did a good brush on range a while back you could spray it to.The name and brand do escape me at the mo,but when im in the garage i will post up make.

I really struggled to find anything decent which came in white.

In the end I used a 2 pack epoxy paint. International something or other. Similar stuff to 2 pack epoxy you can buy for yachts. It went on very easily and has never hardened to become brittle or chip. Its basically gone like powder coat but was painted on. Not as good a finish as powder coat BUT it is maintainable at home.

Has anyone made up trays or guards to cover the parts that get damaged ie sump guards etc.Think this would look nice if done in alloy and then polished

Lol, this thread takes me back.....

I ended up using POR15 'Metal Ready' to kill any rust microbes left after stripping to bare metal, grey chassis primer aerosol, and then finished with POR15 'Hard Nose' gloss paint in white.
With a quick wipe, it looks as good today as when I painted it on in 09. Very happy with the results.
