Norfolk police crush cars!

14,000 drivers in Norfolk have been prosecuted for not having their cars taxed. Unlicensed cars are taken as 'abandoned' cars so therefore they can
be crushed without fear of guilt.
In fact Norfolk police had a big pile of crushed cars on display (viewers were treated to plenty of footage of a crusher in action and told how many tons of pressure it used). The wrecks are then sent abroad for recycling.
My thoughts: all this crushing must cost the police, sorry, you and me, a lot of money. Wouldn't it be better to give the unfortunate drivers 7 days
to pay the tax - then the state would get the money in rather than spend it?
Oh, and the victims can still get to work, pick the kids up from school etc.

I don't dispute that not taxing a car is wrong, I just think the miscreants should have a chance to put things right and give some money to our cash-strapped government. A 7-day warning would be better for everyone, raise more money and avoid the inevitable sense of injustice to see your motor smashed up for the sake of £165. I also didn't like the threatening tone of the report.

Having no tax does not invalidate your insurance.
Many cars that have no tax have no insurance or MOT but not all.
That is why the policy is to allow people 2 weeks to tax their cars so that if money is tight at the end of the month, you can spread the cost over to the next month.
No tax is an offence from the minute it runs out if the car or vehicle is used or parked on a road maintained at public expense. It can be dealt with from that minute onwards. Attitude is all important if stopped for this infringement!

I had a Rover 820 about 10 years ago, I bought it with no tax and asked my insurance company for a cover note (this was on a Friday) come Monday morning 15 mile drive to work all motorway, public transport not an option. So I thought I would risk it (no cover note yet), on the way home BiB Rover passes me in the outside lane (i was in the left hand lane) traffic fairly heavy and he saw I had no tax!!! must have bionic eyes. Anyway get pulled, I was given a producer that also required a valid tax disc back dated to beginning of month. Fair enough, excellent attitude from the BiB.

A breath of humanity Madcop. What a pity that the image Norfolk Police's PR dept chose to present on TV was one of zero tolerance, cut your nuts off, smash up your car for being a bad boy etc. And the BBC happily sends it out on the airwaves. I don't envy you.

I know what you mean as it is a joke, but 14,000 cars were untaxed in farm-jakkerland and that is getting to be a joke - zero tollerance is fine, but maybe they should focus on something more serious like street crime, or burglaries etc..... Road Fund License evasion isnt exactly life threatening....
Mind you - here is a new game - next time you are on a long run, take a look at all of the cars around you and check out for no tax or seat belts..... on a recent run round the M25 I saw at least 20 cars without one or both..... and saw at least 5 which would have had no MOT and unlikely to have no insurance also - this is getting to be a major problem and has to be dealt with....

Why not sell the things at a auction & have the money used for something useful? Public services are crying out for the money & to just crush thousands of pounds worth of motors just does not seem right.
