Unreal Tournament 3 (PC)
Discussion
Bought this via Steam a couple of days ago, and I must say I'm really liking it. I've always had plenty of time for fast-paced shootybang, and really enjoyed Onslaught mode in UT2004, so I'd been looking forward to this for a while. It's really just an evolution of UT2004, with some nostalgic touches that hint back to UT (the noise the shield belt makes, for example, and the sound the health pickups make), and lots of really cool vehicles. The maps look fab, too. There's one that's an underground mine - not particularly cool - complete with Krupps Bagger 288 - exceptionally cool.
The most surprising thing, for me, was how well it runs on my iMac (2.33GHz C2D, 256MB nVidia 7600GT). I was expecting my computer to struggle a bit, as this is the same engine that drives Gears Of War, but it doesn't, really. I'm still getting used to the UT3 look, which appears to involve lots of gritty realism, bloom and normal mapping, rather than the vivid colours and clean futurism of UT2004.
"Slick as snot" is one way of putting it. The AI is pants, of course, but this is a multiplayer game.
Cut scenes in the singleplayer campaign (which is just an introduction to the various game modes) are gloriously cheesy. (Side note - the female characters in the game are refreshingly normally shaped and sized. UT3 definitely does not take the Soul Calibur approach to females in games)
The weapons are without exception satisfyingly meaty, especially the flak cannon.
In short, not bad for £15 - as long as you understand that this is UT2004 with bells on. Which is a plus point for me.
