Does anyone know what type of margin a dealer is likely to attempt to make on a car from underwriting it to actually selling it??

On a used car they will probably put between £4-5k on for the asking price and expect to make about £2k after negotiation/over-allowance and warranties, servicing and re-con etc.

yeah, id agree with that...of course it depends what they paid for it...you know the old saying "buy cheap, sell high" is just as true today, a lot of their money is made by offering bottom book for a car

I know of a dealer that has just paid £25k for an Exige S that i would be interested in should they not be too greedy. They havent revealed what they are going to sell it for yet as they havent actually received the car, i have registered my interest early with them in the hope that they may want to quickly pass it on.

"I know of a dealer that has just paid £25k for an Exige S ". I reckon the markups are around right, but be cautious of the 25k. People often wont be tottally honest about what bthey have accepted from a dealer - they see it as embarrassing.

i understand what you are saying but i believe this figure to be genuine. The guy i spoke to who sold the car was very honest and had no reason to fabricate.

could well be right, but in your place I'd start with the dealer at 25k and push hard. at some point (if he did buy for that sum) he'll do the usual trick of showing you what it stands him at.

on the other hand, if he had bought at 23k, and you started at 27 ..................... :-(

My V8 esprit was in the dealer for sale at £42K.. I looked at it and thought if only... then I saw one just like it for sale for £32k so I bought it.. It was the same car!!! they were selling it on behalf of the owner with a £10k margin on it.. I was delighted with my buy but the dealer was not too hospitipal when I went in to get it serviced a week later hhahahahahahaha.. That was the dealer in Edinburgh

It all depends on the dealer, it's obviously an early Exige S for 25k is it an 06? I'd say 27k as they will put some sort of warranty and also need to show a profit + the sales man's commission.

I'll be selling my Exige S next year, waiting for the Eagle to be released before I do anything.

It is an 06. If they sell it for £27k then i will be interested as long as i get a decent price for mine. If not then i may just wait until you sell yours.

Ho Ho!

Waiting to see the Eagle and if it's not what I want then a 2 11 it's going to be for us. Were buying a Bmw as well as an everyday Car so we'll be really looking for a complete toy, I don't think the Eagle's going to be for us? You never know thou. I'd say they'll offer you between 20k - 21.5 as a trade in what colour and specification is it?

If I were you (and in a way I have been, having had a 111R and then shortly after an Exige S), I really would not look to change to the Exige.

And I agree, I'd wait for a S/C Elise hold off

A year............ Thats like 11 car changes away hehe

I agree with what they're saying about the s/c elise being the car to wait for, unless you definately want an Exige?

Get more use out of the Sports Racer. Are you proposing to do more trackdays? If so, use that to hone your skills and go for more power later on, potentially putting an aftermarket blower on it might be more fun, cheaper and get more bhp.

yes i do plan to do more track days. I thoroughly enjoyed the one that i did previously. In terms of honing my skills though i am doing that simply by driving my Sport Racer more than i drove any of my previous Lotus` obviously not to any great levels but for me track days are all about getting used to the car and gaining more confidence.

This is by far the best Lotus i have had but there is something niggling me about owning an Exige S that wont go away until i buy one.
I have put my car on the classifieds and unless i get close to what i am asking for then i will keep it as i am not desperate right this minute to change. I know some of this sounds very contradictory but i know what i mean.......confused

With regards to the SC instead of the Exige S, i just dont like it. I havent driven one so obviously my opinion is flawed but that spoiler on the back just puts me right off. Also if i was going to spend that amount of money i would want something that looked different to what i have already owned and apart from the spoiler it is virtually identical. They also dont seem to be selling very well which is another concern. As in the paragraph above most of this is probably bolloks but there is something about the SC that i just cant get excited about or put my finger on.

Before Boggy replies telling me to wait for the Eagle have a look at my occupation in my profile and decide how many people of my occupation with two rugrats at home will be available to afford an Eagle........smile:

Before you even think of buying an Exige S drive the S/C Elise you'll love it far more then the Exige S, sure the Exige is the best looking, most track focused, etc etc etc but for the road I'd go for the Elise every time. The reason I don't own one is simple, I've owned 4 Elise variant's now and unless the Eagle blow's me away then I'll be looking at other options, 2 11, 911 Cayman M3 Elise S/C who know's
