Engine transplant '95 M52 to '98 M52 ??

Has anyone changed an early 328i engine for a later one (nikasil to steel liners)? If so, are there any issues of compatibility between the 2 engines?

Also are there any issues if the current engine is an automatic and the new one is a manual? I'm assuming the gearbox can simply be swapped over?
