Not badly fortunately but still upsetting as its my baby!

At the moment, working over in France for a few months so like a good boy i put a GB sign on the car. I say sign not sticker as it is a magnetic one not a 'sticking' one. I thought this would be nicer to the car...

Here it is parked up with magnetic GB.

But it seems like its stripped off a layer of paint because underneath frown

EDIT: ON this last pic the only damage is 'the swirl' what looks like paint bubbling and marks above is just water. I had just tried to see if concentrated car shampoo would lift it and then rinsed. Hadnt bothered to dry properly because of bad mood! Sorry for low res but its the best photobucket would give me

I know its hardly a massive shunt but the rallye is in A1 condition and i have done so much to keep it that way both mechanically and bodywork. Gutted that this of all things seems to have marked it.

Question is, what do i do to sort this out? Is this genuinely a t-cut job or will it need professional attention? What kind of price am i looking at? Will be back in the UK in couple of months so can wait till then if it needs a bodyshop.

i dont know how it has happened. I guess maybe some grit got in there and rubbed off the top layer? But there are no abrasive marks.

HELP!

Moonie

Its hard to tell from the pics what exactly the nature of the mark is.

Simple answer is if its higher than the main paint surface, t-cut, if its not and its deep enough to catch a fingernail on, youre probably stuffed.

From the fact that you have an apparently undamaged area in the centre of it it seems more likely to me that its a reaction to or residue from the glue rather than paint being taken off.

Did you check the back of the GB sticker? Was there anything there? If it has taken a layer off (as per previous post - catching nail would need help) - but had something similiar on a Renault Clio and Meguiars Scratch X remoned it fairlt well - but this was a build up rather than deeps scratches. At the end of the day, if it is scratched too seeply, you are not going to cause a lot more damage if you are carefull. Had a key scratched down the side of my 996, and decided to take 2000 grit sandpaper to it - looked a real mess, but made it hardly noticeable - it still needs a repsray at some stage, but at least it looks pretty good in the meanwhile!

thanks for the replies guys. appreciate its difficult to tell particularly with these images.

It is a strange one.

I just had a look again today and the mark is completely smooth. No rough top surface. It also doesnt appear to be lower or higher than the surrounding paint (if that makes sense).

Its almost like there is severe sun-discolouration in just one area, bizarrely the one area that hasnt seen any light for the last 3 months.

Very strange.

The underside of the GB badge was and is completely clear, no residue, grit or anything.

I took some AG super resin polish to it just now and it made no difference so rubbed it down, waxed over the top and put the badge back on.

I guess i'll have to let one of the detailing boys see it when i'm back in the UK.

oh well, worse things happen eh!

It looks to me like the tailgate has been painted at some stage, and the magnet from the transfer has forced water into the paint, causing it to "bloom". You may find it fades in time, but it'd be worth trying a (very) fine polish to try and gloss it up.
