How important is it to spend a bit of money on memory cards?

8 GB cards go for up to £120 on the Jessops website yet I can pick up the same capacity card on Fleabay for £20.

Why the vast difference in price and is there any real noticable difference?

I agree with Quinny except you can get the same thing with free postage Here

(This is assuming you mean cf cards - they have all the others too)

The difference is mostly down to speed. The fastest cards will read and write a shed load faster than the slow/cheap ones. It is however, entirely dependent on how fast you camera is... no point in having an Extreme 4 in a D40.

ETA - try doing this with a slow card! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Xp7T6BCv8o

Yep,

There are quite a few options other than Jessop's and Ebayyes

And most are preferable, if you either don't want to pay well over the odds (Jessop's)

Or

Get ripped off with non genuine cards (Ebay)
I completely agree.

Stick with one of the better brands like Sandisk or Lexar. I've even had Sandisk cards go through a washing machine and still function perfectly well afterwards...!

That's what I was wondering. I am new to this photography mallarky and have bought a Nikon D60. I paid £20 for a 2 GB memory card when I bought it. I used it at the Chatsworth Rally Show recently and found I had 408 photos at the end of the day so more storeage is a must for things like the Grand Prix, when I have three days worth to fit in.

There's something beautiful about the naive brutality of youtube comments. After that amazing display of the Nikon's frame rate...

"who cares, you're pictures still blow you f*cking jerk-off"

What about roubustness/reliabilty?
- If you have a 6/7/8mp compact recording average compresion jpg's you not going to really need the speed. But you still wouldnt want an el-cheepo alpha-mc-ebay card loosing your fortnights holiday snaps.

On holiday in Vietnam I ran out of memory. So I bought, from a legitimate shop, a fully boxed-and-branded Kingston 75-speed 2GB card. It was ludicrously slow to write, and worse, it died before I got it home to offload the pics!

Guess it wasn't a legit Kingston card then... frown

It might have been £200 when it came out, but it's chapeau en croute for supper if anyone can find me that currently for sale for £200. The IV has been out for quite a while, IIIs are £16 on Amazon marketplace, £40 at Calumet.

[Zimmer frame]I can remember when 256mb SD cards were £80[/Zimmer frame]

they are genuine. i got one from them about 2 years (or so) ago - £120 (was a lot cheaper than anywhere else at the time), but am very pleased with it. now at £18 each, i think i'll get another couple as cheap storage.
