S-peeding idiots

I see in today's paper that two were picked up last night near Calais at 157 and 139 mph respectively. They paid 750 euros on the spot with court cases to follow and their licenses taken off them on the spot. Also a motor bike caugt at 96mph in a 30 limit got the same treatment. I really cannot comprehend how, on this of all weekends, they could have been so damned foolish. As the police get more and more vigilant here it is likely that if they don't turn up in court to face the music and then return to France another time they will face the possibility of a night or two at "the President's pleasure" until they are taken to court within 48 hours. It also seems that when the european countries finally get their act together and we become effectively one country and points are applied for apeeding abroad on their english license they will also risk the same penalty as is imposed on any frenchman caught at that speed; their car is seized and sold for the state treasury. That happened to someone a few weeks back and he lost his M5. You have been warned!
With so many speed traps on the way up to Calais (and some very well concealed ones at that!) how could anyone expect to get away with speeds like that! I just stuck the car on auto pilot at 135KPH and sailed through them all without a flash to be seen. Boring but when they start putting cameras in the boot of plain estate cars parked on the hard shoulder firing out the back window then a little restraint is needed. I must admit that I thought they could tee you up with British points now or has that not happened yet?

I drove a particular road yesterday along with other high performance cars. And you know what. every one was having a little play in short squirts. There was one particular section of motorway were it swooped down and on for a mile or so. There was a bad feeling when every one saw that stretch and every one keeped at a steady 80ish. Our fears were right there was a git holding a camera at the top of the road.
Over the weekend i saw a hell of a lot of people breaking the law. Either by speeding (even a little over the limit, speeding is speeding, the law is the law) or by antics on the side of the Mulassain straight were the crowds gathered. There was double standards being set here by the police who on one hand were moving on and were stopping and talking to some for doing burn outs. Then 15 minuets later a police van came down then stopped and suddenly wheel span to the amazement and up roar of the crown. Go figure.

Spotted your 'Vette there - I was in the Blue S2 Elise that came in, took the roof off and left (the weather had been changeable up to that point!) I think we passed and repassed a couple of times on the Autoroute - seemed a good pace to me, keeping to the limit or just under and it's obvious that the police will be out in force, I'd even been tipped off about the presence at the tolls so the chap on the hard shoulder with a speed gun was no surprise.
of the odd 200,000 people only two made it into the paper. I saw the speed traps on the way in and out but drove the A27 to Le Havre, we didn't see a single police car on that road and it was near 200 km long. The only thing that I did find were the locals cutting in and out of our convoy. and the some times worrying distance they got behind us before overtaking. Still amazing drive down I will always remember near enough 19.00. roof down, warm air, radio broken so listening to Radio RV8 the whole time. god I got burnt !!
A bunch of lads in a PT Cruiser got pulled yesterday on the way back. I had went past them earlier but they later came past me at a decent rate (I wasn't exactly plodding along myself). I saw the blue lights of the bike in my mirror which then went past at easily over a double ton (klicks) and pulled them off at the next slip road.
I actually thought the bike was after the Danes who went past me at starship speeds just before the PT did but the Le Plod seemed happier to pull the Brits.
I think if you stay below 150 they're not so interested. Boring I know but it's their country and their roads.

Had afantastic year - very chilled out with great weather and even better racing. However... On the way back (old N138/158 route) we were travelling in convoy at a very sensible 100kmh pace when an old Renault Scenic thing decided that it needed to sit 2" from the backside of my dad in his car behind us. We all duly pulled over but because it was such a piece of crap it could only accelerate very slowly. We were closing in on a slow moving van so i put my foot down a little to pass it before i got the same bumper-to-bumper treatment. As i pulled back into the slow lane having passed the van i got flashed by a road-side box. I looked down at the speedo and was doing 125kmh.
I guess that makes me a speeding idiot but that aside does anyone know what the rules are regarding French speed cameras? What are the repercussions?

The roads are good for it, and if the cars were, I don't see the reason for any outrage. It's hardly the M25 at 8.30 in morning. I doubt there's anyone who hasn't done it.

If its the same one I saw, he was still clogging it a bit. He passed us a few times on the way back up to calais. Think this one i saw was in convoy with a yellow 360 and something else that i cant remember.lowdrag said:

I can understand what you’re saying about them risking it on this weekend but I hope we never get to the stage of 'one country' the French Police may start pulling everyone that’s doing 100mph on deserted roads in the middle of France in the middle of the night just to make a few quid and stick a few points on licenses.Vette_1978 said:

I spoke to the driver of the Aston, I think he said his fine was 95 Euros, not a lot if you can run an Aston.Our little Caterham was so damned noisy and windy that interstellar speeds weren't on the menu. However we did enjoy hooning a bit on the backroads where we didn't see a single Gendarme.

Sadly not true. I was pulled for 150 km/h earlier at the Boulogne péage; apparently snapped by a camera somewhere that I didn't see (I was looking at the road, funnily enough). I'm not going to claim I wasn't bang to rights, because I was - had the hammer down a bit trying to catch the rest of the convoy after a small detour. They do not consider 150 is 'safe'.Amusingly, the two guys who paid €750 and were, quote, "walking back to England" formed part of the lecture I got from Mr Gendarme. And his boss, who also provided a fascinating diatribe about "France not being conquered territory that you english can use as your playground and come here and disrespect our laws; you are all welcome but we expect you to treat the place with respect..." etc.
Out of interest, what is the right answer to 'do you drive at that speed at home?'
