Bikesafe London - Docs
Discussion
Have some questions:
1) I keep my tax disc in my pocket. Will Bikesafe Plod tolerate this?
2) Unless my insurance Co pull their finger out I may be unable to prove insurance after 12pm on the day. Will a faxed certificate do?
3) Will it be ok to respond to any questions with "I aint tellin ewe nuffing coppa..."? [1]

I have just examined 6 of the Met Police Bikesafe team, and in the hotel on Monday night we had an interesting discussion.
Bikesafe is funded by Transport for London to the tune of £300,000 per year with the aim of assessing 2000 riders in the London area during 2003. They are well on target to exceed this number btw. There is a team of 16 full time riders. although despite being volunteers none are formally qualified advanced instructors (hence the reason I had to examine them for the diploma and Btec).
Their primary concern is the standard of riding displayed by the rider, but they will do a legality check on the bike and they will require proof that you are licenced and the bike is insured.
They are not concerned about cans or dark visors (providing weather is appropriate)but they cannot be seen to take someone out who may not be insured or taxed (even though you may well be).

So will a faxed insurance certificate do?
Suppose I'd better take the masking tape off the number plate too. [1]
[1] Not TiC.
Why not give Paul a ring and discuss it with him.
They are all very keen Bikeriders themselves and i have known most of them for a few years now and can say that you will have a great day. (nice fatboys breakfast too!)
Dont know if you read my post a few weeks ago about Racecans and Visors...dont worry too much providing its not raining etc etc and dont do like 2 recent chaps...turn up without even having a Licence, its not that liberal.

If it aint here tomorrow I will. A quick call to my insurer should prove I'm covered.
Will tape disk to bike.

Sweet. Am covered by one policy 'till 12:00 on the 31st and from 11:00 on the 31st. If I've got my 24 hour clock right. Should be one hour ovelap.
12:00 is mid day. 00:00 would be midnight?

Yes, the only man to make a Pan European look like a FS1E.
I met six of the team and I am supposed to be examining another 6 this coming Tuesday which unfortunately I can't do as I am in meetings all day, but they invited me to spend a day at the Ace Cafe with them in the near future which I am looking forward to.

If you have never ridden a FS1E then im afraid that you havent lived.
Damn that brings back memories...
My first bike was a Fizzie
Apparently the night I bought it my mate followed me home on his GS500 and my scarf came a bit loose, trailing behind me. It took me years to shake off the nickname 'The Doctor'
Even filed 1 millimetre of metal of the top off the exhaust port to squeeze out that extra little bit of power.
When I was at school we built a kart that had an FS1E in it - great fun... - 45mph with your arse 2 inches off the ground - at 15 years old nothing could match it for kicks.

I remember that i used to pull the carb cover off when id left home for a spin and the bike would sound really throaty...well as throaty as a 16yrs old kid would think anyway.
Had to remember to slide the cover back on once id returned home because my dad would go mad...lol....memories.

yeahhh - and I bet you used to get a white tyre marker pen to highlight the letters on the tyre wall too
& remember the old yokohamas - we often successfully 'remoulded' them by glueing on strips of lino from the floor under the kitchen cupboards - I swear it achieved better grip...
Then there was the first time you ever tried to over take an artic on a dual carriage way. Nicely slip streaming and getting a good head of steam to come along side. Only to find you couldn't break the turbulance at the front of the lorry and had a queue of three cars behind waiting for you to complete the manouvre....
Ahhhh Such Joy!
