Help with 5 Series electrical glitch

I have a 2002 520i which keeps telling me that i have a blown rear light bulb, either the right rear break light or the central third brake light. I've cheched the bulbs and the fuse/connections and all seems well but the lights won't come on when i hit the breaks (left side light works fine), all the other lights on the car are working fine. Any one out there come across this problem and if so is there a simple fix?
Forgive me if you have already done this...
How have you checked the bulb? It may look OK to the eye but it still might be broken.
If your left rear brake light is working the simple answer is to swap the bulbs over and then see what happens.
If the fault swaps over it's the bulb, if not it's the connection/wiring.
Most electrical problems are down to poor contacts, check the bulb holder for oxidation/corrosion and clean if necessary. Also check the harness connection to the light unit for security (unplugging and plugging it back in again usually works wonders).
