Looking for something as a daily drive, and budget of around £10K. Am I being optimistic?
Either save a little more and get a good early S2 or buy a VX220.VX220 is a very good compromise if it floats your boat.
I had this choice when I bought mine. Although mine was never going to be used as a daily drive, so I went for an S1.
I thought to myself id rather have a good S1 than a Not so good S2.
However, If it was a daily driver I think I would go for the S2.. but It will be worth saving up a few more quid for a good one mind.
Then again, no reason why you cant use an S1 everyday, you'll love it unless your used to a rolls royce, or your a puff.

Now I am not sure wether to get an S1 or a VX220 as a daily driver.
Christ, don't get the keyboard warriors all riled up again!!!
You'll get a lovely S1 for that kind of wonga. Or, if you drink J2O when you're down the pub, like watching Big Brother, and are generally in bed by 9 o'clock, get an S2....
If £10k is what you've got then buy the best S1 you can. All Elises can throw up big bills now and again but I'd go as far as saying that, in general, a £10k S2 would be more likely to generate big bills than a well maintained £10k S1.
Just one thing though: I wouldn't pay a premium for a very low miles S1 - with some good miles under her belt a leggier car should have had all the niggles properly sorted.

Cheers everyone. I see the point about getting a poor S2. Now I am not sure wether to get an S1 or a VX220 as a daily driver.
Drive them both. They're subtley different cars and you may have a clear favourite. The VX will probably prove more reliable because you'll get a newer car for your money and it's definitely more refined but the handling isn't quite as sharp and it's much less fuel efficient. The VX will be much cheaper to insure. The S1, if you get a 111S or Sport 160 will be faster...
Bare in mind on your test drives that not all Elises are the same - bits wear out. If it doesn't handle like you think it ought to, try another one.
On an oldish car, especially if it's covered a few miles, it's quite possible that the steering rack and/or suspension will need refurbishing.
