Greetings,
Since Elise/Exige owners would probably comprise the biggest market for this car, what are your thoughts?

Just some brief info:
Stiffer chassis than Elise(apparently)
4wd (Subaru)
Flat-4 turbo (Subaru EJ20,22,25)
around 900kgs all up
260-400hp
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murtaya

Costs: 22k fully factory built incl. SVA and VAT
Around 15k for a kit

http://adrenalinemotorsport.co.uk/design.htm

Anyone test-driven it? Or at least had a look?
Cheers

I'd be more interested if it was RWD. Less weight and greater simplicity.

Would 4WD really be necessary on the 150 bhp varient?

I considered building one rather than buying my Elise. In the end I decided that 4wd with the engine hanging over the front axle wasn't a good idea for a sports car. They claimed to have solved the Imprezza's chronic understeer problems but I can't see it handling like an Elise.

Didn't like the looks of the fuel consumption either.

Having driven a couple of Elises and a VXT and a VXR220 AND a Murtaya I would say that you would be VERY suprised how the Murtaya handles - the flat four is a light engine with a very low centre of gravity and of course there is a rear diff to even up the weight.
Yes, the fuel consumption is not going to be as good as an Elise or a VX cos of the extra cogs to be turned but it is very much horses for courses - there is a boot, cabin space and the power and the traction especially in the wet, etc.
Of course does not mean you should not buy an Elise or VX but I would not write off the Murtaya as being nose heavy like you may think - it does feel different but so do the two lotus variants.
As I always say - you HAVE to have a drive in this car, it is incredible!

I also couldn't justify the cost of a factory built Murtaya and didn't have time to build one. Which was why I didn't bother to go to any of the track days they put on.

Oh and I don't like Turbos much. hehe

Well, I've read here that two Ultima owners have said after having driven it, the Murtaya would be quicker than their Ultimas point-to-point.

Seems to be a bit bonkers since both of them had 500hp Ultimas, that they lovingly built themselves.

It'll be very interesting to see what Elise/Exige/Vx220 owners who've driven a Murtaya would think.

still looks like a kit car inside and out to me.

Performance figures look a bit optimistic too.

£22K factory built is a fair price for what it is.

How a GRP tub can be stiffer than an aluminium one I dunno...im no structural engineer......Id like to see the crash test results from one...is it safe for our roads...if someone T bones you at a junction etc will you live to tell the tale?

if you just want to go fast in a 2 seater sportscar then there are soooo many options out there for £22K...and that is their problem frown

If you want to go fast in a two seater sportscar in the snow they might have a niche thoughwink

Most of the performance figures look reasonable enough to me given that they're 0-60 times which reap the biggest benefits from the 4wd - a 280bhp/1200Kg STi Impreza can go under 5s with a hard (brutal) enough launch so a 900Kg car with the same engine should be a fair bit quicker.

I haven't had anything to do with them but having had a bit to do with Subies I'd say if you do build one, make sure its based on the STi Type-RA mechanicals rather than a regular WRX. That way you get good stuff like 280+ bhp and the driver controlled centre diff (DCCD) which has adjustable lockup and 64R:36F static torque split when open. It makes for remarkably understeer-free and entertaining (aka tailhappy) Imprezas so I'm sure it would be great in a Murtaya.

First time I saw it was in action at it's "sort-of" unveiling at Brands Hatch. I was in a Fury R1 which with my novice-like skills was able to around most elises but not all, exiges appeared a tad quicker than me.
The murtaya was lapping at the same pace as me - not getting away from me and didn't seem to be "sparing the horses". However, dunno if it was setup well, what skills the driver had, etc.

It's not just a GRP tub, it also has honeycomb panels forming into a monocoque. I doubt there will be crash test results any time soon, but I expect it'd perform better than an elise in an impact having seen the guts of both.

They are, by all accounts from people I trust, insanely fast, simple and very solid.
I'd expect this isn't really the place to ask the question of how good they are though as I'd have to disagree with the OP that the Elise/Exige market is the market they are going for, the offering is too different.

eek The Elise has one of the strongest driver cells of any production road car. If it's better than that, it's probably the safest car in the world.

Its just a pity it is so close to the ground. A jeep rode over the sills and completely entered the passenger cell, bending the pax seat in half. Luckily the seat was un occupied. It may be strong, but not impregnable.....it was a sobering experience!!!!

yeah, I can vouch for the Elise toowink ...and yeah the bad things are size related...collisions with 4 x 4s etc and you could just go under and get driven over ! frown

wasnt it on "the making of" video, I think the Elise back in 96 was the first car ever to be able to be driven froma 30mph head on impact test?

So no doubts there, but like you say, I doubt we will be seeing the crash test results from the Murtaya any time soon...but Im afraid thats enough to keep me out of one of these for a weekend road car...they just look like a kit car frown
