Jaguar Land Rover Creates 600 Jobs

Company says recruitment drive is a result of record sales

Jaguar Land Rover is creating 600 new UK jobs to keep up with booming sales for cars such as the new XF. The firm says the new car is selling well and Land Rovers have selling in record numbers for three years running.

Following the sale of the company to India’s Tata it plans to invest £700million in green technology to make its vehicles more environmentally friendly. From the 600 positions created the majority will be in technology and product development programmes, but there will also be vacancies in purchasing, finance and human resources.

Jaguar Land Rover is also launching a new graduate programme for over 80 graduates who will join the business in September. Graduates will participate in a number of activities and events over their two year development period while at the same time integrating themselves into their chosen department.

Announcing the scheme, newly appointed Jaguar Land Rover CEO David Smith said: ‘This recruitment drive demonstrates Jaguar Land Rover's confidence in our future. With our new owners, we have entered an exciting era with stunning new models and ambitious technologies. I can't remember a better time to be part of the British car industry, and certainly it is a brilliant time for Jaguar Land Rover.’

Stretching the truth a bit to say "part of the British Car Industry" don't you think?
p.s. what's David Smith's background.

In any case it has to be good news for LRJ

Agreed. I was unfortunately getting too used to negative stories about the motor industry.

The British car industry (whilst being totally foriegn owned) is bigger, better, and more professional than ever.

600 new jobs in the UK sounds like part of the British Car Industry to me. Don't really care where the parent company is.

The interesting thing is that the jobs are mostly in technology and product development.
Clearly Tata are thinking long term.
Some people might still be hung up on the fact that the owners are not British, but in my view this is very good news of British engineering, manufacturing, and definitely the British car industry.

Great news but stories like these always seem to provoke a "who cares who owns them" response. An attitude that only seems to be found in this country.

It would still be nice if it was British owned though.
Still, good news for LR & Jaguar though.

Possibly it might prove that a lot of the problem with British Leyland was the management.

The new jobs are largely highly skilled, where we in the UK still just have descent centres of excellence in education (although the labour loonies are doing their best to destroy anything elitist for politically correct reasons).
Its good knews don`t get me wrong, but I wonder where most of the manufacturing and the sort of jobs that less educated/skilled people do will go?
Mind you, there are also some fantastic engineers in India, and they work for a lot less then we do?

Yep, Tata have a reputation for thinking long term and investing for the future.

Looks like good news to me.

Good news for the UK - India has started outsourcing to a low cost country...

Knowing JLR's engineering workforce I would have thought most of the jobs can be filled by swaping the many contract positions to permanent. The engineering depts have been understaffed for a while so sounds like great news.

I have seen a few XF's on the road, and while not completely convinced by some aspects of the styling, the press seem to have nothing but praise for the car.Well done Jag(Tata) for turning it round.....now if we can just convince those cash-rich Indian gentlemen to go looking for a certain Russian by the name of Smolenski........

The 600 jobs were inclusive of contract and permie labour. The main reason is the divorce from Ford and the loss of their facility and manpower.
There is a dearth of engineers, which is hardly surprising as the training for such persons has been sadly lacking for many years.
The slow realization that 'ologies in business studies and media do not make a sound basis for engineering disciplines is now upon us. People with science, mechanical and engineering qualifications are sorely needed NOW - people who have a passion for cars.

Does being foreign owned necessarily make a car less British?
Let's see, MG SV(when MG was UK owned) Vs todays foreign owned Jaguar XKR.

MG SV was British owned, but made in Italy, based strongly on an Italian car, American Ford engine, styled in the UK and finished here.

Jaguar XKR is foreign owned, but made in UK, UK engine and most parts, UK engineered and styled.

You tell me.
