Hi, I am looking to buy a mk2 mr2, rev 3 and was wondering whether high mileages would be a problem with these cars?

Is over 120k bad?

cheers

any other buying advice would be great

my Mk2 Rev1 has 130k's.
and nothing wrong with it.
3gse is pretty bomb proof in n/a form.
h/g's only go if poorly treated.
keep the oil fresh and the coolant full an you'll have no probs. (don't expect it to be fast though)

When you say not fast, how not fast do you mean! 0-60?

No its the NA

Well I am hoping it's still quick enough as want to turn it into Challenge car!

Is it comparable to a hot hatch, like a clio 172?

Rev 1+2 about 7.2 i think smile
Rev 3 onwards 7.9 due to side impact bars and weight.
even though they had another 20bhp from the 3gse

how much are you looking to spend?

i know of a mica orange BEAMS and a red BEAMS (98-99 imports i think) for sale, they are not cheap though!

Officially on paper, they dont keep up with hot hatches like clio 182s/ctrs, but in the real world there is not a great deal in it upto 120mph from my experience. I own a rev 5 on 90k with no issues atall. Defo go for it, test drive one first though. These engines have to be revved (5700rpm+) to make the most

For a challenge car ideally you want a rev3+ (1994 on) Gltd tin top less weight and stiffer than T-Bars or Sunroof cars, my choice for challenge car would be Tin Top, Sunroof and then T-bar, infact I wouldn't bother with a T-Bar. rev3+ n/a cars are noticably quicker than earlier cars if you look at the challenge series, they do feel flatter low down the rev range, but high up they are good.

I've got a Rev2 NA - excellent car which flew through it's MOT first time today at 110k miles.

As far as speed goes, it's pretty much identical to a 306 GTI6 in my experience of some fairly, *aherm* comprehensive testing.... smile So with that in mind i'd say it's going to be a bit slower than the clio 172 and above level hatches.

You should also note that the people on the forums who are looking for new engines for their n/a's tend to have around the 120000 mile mark on them at failure time. My rev2 n/a cracked the water jacket at 112,000 miles I know another guy with the a rev 2 n/a who's block also cracked 130,000 miles and on the forum see plenty of bigend failures at similar mileages.

Reason for that is Herman, when a car gets to 100K people tend to stop servicing and looking after them.

Not saying that's the case in all of them but it's a common fault of failure.

bits do only last for certain mileages, like bushings etc so they need replaced, engines should be ok if looked after. Problem then is, u never know how it's been treated before.

For a challenge car i'd be looking at a Rev1 tintop with a Rev 3 engine in therewink

Sorry to be pedantic, but the Challenge no longer exists. It now tied in with the 750 Motor Club/Rogue Motorsport and not competing for peanuts & raisins - it's the MR2 Championship now.

The Challenge was run by Red Dragon and is now called MR2 Racing, but MKII's are not alowed frown

If you're serious about running in the Championship, best to give Rogue Motorsport a shout. Generally a nice bunch of people and can point you in the right direction for the right car. They may try sell you one of their cars though biggrin

Also check out imoc.co.uk and mr2championship.com for more info

If it's any consolation, I have been running MR2s with loads more miles than 120k on and off track with very few issues. At 120k I'd say the engine is only just run in if bought with good history and maintained well.
