Business for an errant child
Discussion
Ok, few ideas wanted.
My son needs a job when he starts uni this summer. Nothing much going (or so he says) in terms of permanant jobns which will pay his bills and course fees but not requitre 70 hours a week and this defeat the pont of going to uni to study. If all else fails I suggested he start his own small business. I might put in a bit of seed money, say £1k-£2k.
Him; got an English degree, and a masters in creative writing (awaiting PhD start) bright and creative but only works hard on things that interest him which revolve around his writing, Aikido and travelling. Can't drive.
Short of rent boy, any ideas?

Start an Aikido class in a local church hall?
I think the insurance would be an issue there but selling Aikido gear could work. I recall someone here on PH sells martial arts equipment via the net. He has worked in the past seling places on Aikido courses for the larger dojos (is that the right spelling?) but got paid in lessons and equipment, which hardly pays the real bills.Golfman said:
Sorry to be harsh but why isn’t he on here finding ideas himself, why is daddy doing it for him at his age? Kick him out into the real world, join the army, travel the world etc…
Perhaps because 'daddy' uses this forum and his son doesn't? As for travelling or joining the army, can't really see them being to open to the idea of him working around his uni hours. Why not just get some bar work or the like? Whilst a business can be a good idea it can also fast become a bit of a burden if it's successful and planned around your free time.

Research Assistant in the Uni
CV writing/editing
A company somewhere must be sponsoring his PhD, if not why not?? I have been for interviews for 2 PhD so far and both have had sponsorship attached. I have been unable to accept them as i work for a rival company and am not quitting my job.
But why not apply for ajob at the uni as said before as a research assistant, if not basic call centre job etc.

A little bit harsh, but to extend this point further; a person who is self employed will only be successful if the drive comes from within, not from another person. In other words, going self employed has to be son's choice and idea, not dads! RichBurley said:

In other words, going self employed has to be son's choice and idea, not dads! He has applied for a few call centre and Scottish parliament jobs (not as a MSP) . The financial institutions seem to be keeping their powder dry, keeping him on the list for assessment as and when they need people. Uni jobs sounded a good bet and he has been on their job site although not all jobs are open to external candidates and the research assist jobs are all in medical and technical areas. The local council have a good site and there are loads of learning/teaching assistants at the moment ready for September (he had 16 months in a school as a TA in Japan).
I did suggest he trained as a doorman for ad hoc work though one of the agencies/pubs/clubs. Although not heavily built he can look after himself and is articulate and persuasive (although a bit of a flowery bulls
tter).Brown and Boris said:

Also out of interest, what PHd follows on from English and Creative Writing? Is 3 years extra study in this fields going to help his prospects?
He is doing resaerch work on some Scottish sci-fi writer with a view to going into academia.plasticpig said:

He is doing resaerch work on some Scottish sci-fi writer with a view to going into academia. You know? I've an idea. Since he has a degree in English and Creative Writing and is intending to do a Phd in the same why not, you know, urmmm, write something - perhaps even creatively!
A bit like that Scots writer - Iain M Banks. His writing sells a lot and makes him pots of money! Why not, errrm, actually DO IT instead of, oh the irony, writing about it?
If that isn't going to work why not do Mills and Boon. I s
t you not. You don't make big bucks but you can make money. He ought to be able to turn that s
t out like cranking a handle.Don said:

I know the writer from his PhD isn't Banks but the name slips my mind. He did try to get some money out of various Scoptish resaerch instiutes and the publisher of the author and they expressed interest, but no hard cash. There's his firt business lesson!
