You are not alone mate - mine did the same. Had to get it sweapped under warranty with sony. The new one hasnt skipped a beat so i can only assume there was a defect on early models !

Get onto the helpline and you will have a new one in a day or so !

Have you done an update recently? Mine completed an update then wouldnt read the discs any longer. Phoned Sony and they bought a new one ot my house the next day and just swapped it.

Mine died the other week, and they refused to send a new one out to me - Only a recon. I eventually got a new one, but not before the delivery bloke came and had already taken the security seals off the box. Idiot.

I had this, with the 80010514, but Sony swapped it out. The only downside is all my demos and downloaded games are lost. (Not sure how to get back the ones I have paid for).

You can re-download them up to 5 times.

What about save files?

Your save files go, but your online account can be used again as that isn't saved into the hard drive

I backed my PS3 up, so I kept all my saved files, as well as network, etc.

Can you take the drive out and plug into a Windows PC to back up? If it's FAT32 that should work?

I want to upgrade my HDD to a bigger one at some point.
