My temperature gauge is being a bit eratic, usually once it is up to running temperature it sits nicely around 80, the fans kick in and everythng seems fine.

The gauge has started to fluctuate between 70 and 90, doesn't seem to affect the running and I'm pretty sure that this is not the engine getting hotter or colder as the changes happen within seconds rather than a few minutes. I suspect a problem with the gauge, sender or cabling in between.

I had a bit of a poke around and I think I've identified the correct cable and the sender but it's not too clear from the bible.

I've read about this alternative sender which can be used with a resistor in place and I think this mod has been done to mine already. The cable I've found comes out of the loom by the plenum and then goes down to a spade connector on the engine block tucked right behind the dizzy, the wire looks to have been extended and there is a resistor in it.

Is this the mod to get the cable to the second temp sender and is this the location of the second sender?

I've disconnected the wire and checked it and all looks OK. The connector on the sender seems to be a little loose - it can be rotated left and right a bit, this might be the cuase of my erratic readings.

There is a round terminal connector slighlty higher up (and a lot easier to get to) which I am assuming is the old connector.

Assuming I've got the right cable and sender, how easy is it to replace the sender and does anyone know what the part number is? Do you have to take the dizzy out to this second sender? As I'd rather not can the other one be replaced?
I'm going to have another look this weekend and run some continuity checks on the wire to see if is the cable or resistor breaking down. What's the resistor value? I'll pop into Maplins and pick one up if I can.

Any other thoughts about this?

The original Temp sensor is the one tucked away behind the dizzy. The other one can be used with the resistor and is the one normally used with The modwise mod.
However to set up you will have to either set the gauge to when the fans come on or plug into the ecu to see what the temp is really at and align that way. Or use a thermo gun at the same point as the sender to get temp reading and screw the resistor in out so thermo temp gun matches the guage...All very tricky along with the resistor adjustment only being very small.

So the 'alternative' one is the one near the plenum?

Thanks
