My First Road trip to south of france advice needed
Discussion
Guys
Im planning a road trip with the wife to the south of france in September 2008. There are a number of places that i want to vist and wonder if any of you helpful lot could advise me on the best route to take.
My Plans
Day 1: I intend to catch the ferry to calais and drive to Dijon on the first day. I would like
to stop off at the Reimes pits but does doing this add a great deal of time to the
journey?
Day 2: Dijon to nice (via N85 route de napoloen)
Day 3/4: Spent in Nice
Day 4/5: Spent in Monaco
Day 6: Return home, looking to stop about halfway so not sure where to stop for the night.....any suggestions.
I would like to see the milau brige, gorge du tarn and drive the col de turini what would be the best way of including these on my trip?...if anyone can advise the best route to take or any other interesting sites to visit on the way it would be much appreciated.

Hi Neil,
I don't think you are going to have enough time in 6 days to do those extras of the Milau and Tarn. They are way over in the west compared to the rest of your trip. You could do it, but you'd be doing 12-14 hour stints without stops to get there and back in 6 days and visit all those places. You OK with doing those kind of hours?

I agree with Jackwood: you're looking at a lot of driving.
I would aim to get further south than Dijon on day one, further than Lyon perhaps. That way, you can enjoy the N85 and not be too concerned about making the next stop on your itinerary. The Reims pit lane is 10minutes off the autoroute.
A return journey via Millau is more do-able than "the Tarn": the former is a bridge on a motorway but the latter is an entire department a long way from anywhere whose roads need to be discovered by leisurely exploration.
Personally, I would ditch Nice and Monaco, neither of which is particularly nice, and spend three or four days in the Tarn. There are some wonderful restaurants and hotels around which you could base a very pleasant short touring holiday. If you're intent on Provence, then you may wish to spend some time in the Gorges du Verdon rather than trying to squeeze in the south west as well.
To get a better idea, buy a Michelin 1:200,000 road atlas and consider the "scenic" roads.

I drove the A75 across the Millau bridge on Saturday.
The drive up from Beziers through the mountains is fantastic - easily the best stretch of motorway I've ever been on!
The A75 takes you straight across the bridge and there's a rest stop shortly after where you can get a good view of the bridge and grab some food too. However, the best thing to do for a really good view of the bridge is drive into Millau itself - you can actually end up driving right under it and there are a couple of places to pull over and take pics if you want.
Enjoy,
