If for instance one had a Gallardo but was thinking about getting a 997 would said 997 seem a little dissapointing or is it sufficiently different to not really pose a comparison and thus is still interesting?

997 carrera S I think.

Wife has always wanted one, dream car for her.

Would be a temp car for me, but after probably keep it so she could use it.

i kept my 996 when i bought the sl, partly to avoid taking the depreciation hit and to keep the miles off the sl ( on which basis it almost makes financial sense too : porsche running costs being less than half those of the sl ), but also because it's just so characterful, so different to any other car

I'm qualified to reply on this one as I've owned 2 Gallardos and then bought a Carerra S last year.

The Porsche is a better car to drive in many ways - nicer steering, better connection with the road, more comfortable, superb throttle response, rifle bolt gearshift etc etc. It is hugely practical too after a Gallardo with great seats, tight turning circle and all mod cons in the cabin. The car commutes well, tours brilliantly and is better/more involving to drive on a winding road than just about anything - including a Gallardo SE.

The only disappointments are the looks and the sound - both are OK but obviously not at the Gallardo's level.

Dont do it - The 997S feels like a fast BMW, great everyday car and very practical with low maintenence costs but its NO Gallardo. Only the GT3's get close to the speed and handling of a Gallardo.

Sense of occasion is also night & day.

Bear in mind this isn't to replace the Gallardo as such.

It would be a fill in but then I might keep it and loose the Elise.

Between you all you've started to worry me now, I remember some years ago when I had my 360 on order I test drove a 996 as a fill in whilst it came and found it very boring so I bought a Tuscan which was anything but!

Thing is, lots of folks go on about how fab 911s are and I've never had a Porsche, plus the wife fancies the idea of effectively awapping the Elise (which she won't use) for a 911.

If I had one for a few months maybe I'd "get it"?

I loved my 997 4S for the build, the quality and the capability of the thing. But, it was a boring car that didnt stir my soul at the end of the day. I dont own a Gallardo, Ive got a 355 now, but i can imagine the Gallardo will give you all the thrill, the drama and the noise you'll ever need. Just look at one, they are stunning. Nobody notices 911's, people swarm round Italian exotica, whether this is what you want is upto you.

Friend of mine has a 997 which I've driven a couple of times, as I was toying with the idea of getting a Porsche.
But then I came to my senses and decided to buy myself a Gallardo.
Oh my word! There is no comparison whatsoever - the Gallardo is in a different league completely! nuts Best decision I've made in a long time!
